Q: I need iOS 10 with airplay and without mirror

I have used my IPAD to stream Showtime for years now with Airplay without mirroring.  Now the new iOS 10 only lets me stream with mirroring and SHOWTIME seems to be the only one that won't work with mirroring on.  How do I get it off of mirroring on new iOS 10.

Hi. The new Control Center has two panes. Swipe up, then left to access the right hand pane where you will see the devices available for basic AirPlay already listed.

Thanks Diana, however, for certain programs i.e. Showtime the new version of iOS 10 does not let you turn on Airtime without mirroring.  The horizontal swipe you mention is mainly for music where you don't want a picture on your television.  I finally called Apple Care yesterday and they confirmed that Airtime with mirroring are all in one in the new version and can't be separated as in the previous versions.  I guess developers were not aware there are a few apps out there like Showtime that only work with mirroring off.  I doubt if Apple will change so I am going to contact Showtime and see if they will change theirs.  I have to say I personally am not thrilled with all of the OS changes both with IOS and on the Mac.  Too many of the programs I have been using for some time no longer work and some developers just are not keeping up with the changes. Thanks for the answer though I appreciate it.

Hi. Whatever you heard from Apple Care, basic AirPlay is available unchanged from the second pane of Control Center. If your Apple TV is listed there, and you select it, any video (or music, of course) will play through Apple TV. You can try it with a vimeo video in a browser. Now, apps are able to block AirPlay if they wish. But that's a separate issue. If your ShowTime used to work with basic AirPlay, it should continue to do so.

Hi again, thanks for replying.  I know Airplay still plays though the AppleTV, however, with Showtime and only Showtime if you try playing with mirroring on as it is on all the time with the NEW iOS update a notice comes up from Showtime that mirroring MUST be off to use.  Please note I am using the Showtime App on my IPad.  Before this update there was a switch on the Airtime that could be turned on and off.  This is not a big deal as I did not update the IOS on my IPhone so I can just use that that still has the mirroring switch.   Thanks again.

One last time. Basic Airplay is still available with iOS 10. Swipe up, then swipe left to see the right hand pane of Control Center. On the iPad it lists the devices available for AirPlay. It doesn't say AirPlay, it just lists them. You'll find Apple TV in that list and you can select it to AirPlay a video to it. Someone told you that this was mainly for music, but it is not only for music. Please give it a try. Believe me, it actually works as described, and is not mirroring.

Diana, I understand how Airplay works but again it has nothing to do with selecting what device you want.  It has to do with the fact that mirroring NOW is automatically included with the Airtime and you don't have a way to turn off the mirroring as you did before the latest upgrade.  In fact when you swipe up it actually says "AirPlay Mirroring".  AppleCare Tech Support said they didn't know why it was changed that way but it was.  Apple engineers probably thought they were doing a favor and they were correct except probably for this one thing.  Again, I will just use my IPhone which I have not updated the IOS yet and use that until Showtime modifies their protocol.  No big deal but thanks again.   I do appreciate the response as my AppleCare runs out on all my current products and since they don't offer any extension plans this board might well be the only place to get some problems answered at least until I upgrade my equipment.

Please listen as I am getting tired of repeating myself. You can access AirPlay mirroring on the left hand pane of the new Control Center. Do not use this if you do not want mirroring.  You can access basic AirPlay, not mirroring, in the right hand pane where it shows a list of devices, with iPad on top. This list is the same list you used to see when you tapped the AirPlay button in iOS 9. Please try following these instructions and see if they work. Do not touch the AirPlay Mirroring button if you do not want mirroring.

HI again, my iPad and Airport Express was all the devices that was showing in the right side pane not my AppleTV.  I reset my Apple TV and updated the software and THEN it did show up in the right side pane.  Prior to me resetting the AppleTV it only Showed up in the left pane under th AirPlay Mirroring. Now I see what you were talking about!   Maybe AppleCare should know enough and we may have settled this long before!  Thank You again Diana as it solves a big problem for me!

Finally! Perhaps it only shows at the right when it's turned on, while the mirroring button may work differently.

No. Just tried it, and the sleeping ATV doesn't appear in either list, mirroring or basic.

TThanks. This solved a problem I had using AirPlay with mirroring where there would be regular dropout of the signal.  With "basic" airplay no issues
