Q: Caller ID now shows all calls as United States on iOS 10

After updating my phone to iOS 10.0.1, all incoming phone calls, local or long distance now show the location as "United States", rather than the City/State, etc. as was standard on prior iOS versions.

I saw another post that suggested checking Settings/General/Language and Region, and also Settings/Phone/Dial Assist (On). these were/are my defaults.

Anywhere else I can check to restore the full Caller ID function? I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Location is not part of caller ID information, check your Contact cards for the callers.

Thanks for the reply. These are not personal contacts. My phone always ID'd any caller's location as a normal function, unless they had blocked their ID. Now they all show up as "United States". It was helpful to note the location, as I get many outside calls. I'm just seeking to restore the prior function that has changed since my update. Thanks.

I have never seen (or known of) caller ID adding a location field to an incoming call. iPhones get the location from your Contacts database.

Really? All my incoming calls that are not id'ed by name have always shown up as number, with city /state below it, unless they blocked it. It's always been present on my Verizon iPhone 5s in iOS9. I assumed all carriers display this. I rely on this to screen my calls, when one comes in from "number/Colo. Springs, CO", or "number/Dayton, OH", I let those go to voice mail. My Recent call log is usually a list of many locations. Now I have no idea if non-contact listed callers are local or out of the area. Everyone not in Contacts now shows as "United States"This is/was a great function for me.

Does the carrier have control on how callers are displayed? Maybe a Verizon catch up issue?

    Maybe, certainly worth a call.

Thanks for the feedback. Prior posts regarding this seem to point to the carrier as providing all Caller ID data, though there was a "Set Up Caller ID" function on prior iOS versions. I'm just trying to determine which vendor is responsible for this change on my phone display. I'll assume (hope) this isn't a change by design, but something not syncronized with the new iOS. I'm surprised you haven't seen this. Just a routine converting an area code to a location for an incoming call. Seems pretty simple, and useful (for me).  I assumed all phones/carriers would reflect this. Guess not. I had no idea.

I appreciate your time in responding.

All of our phones (on T-Mobile) started doing the same thing. This is very annoying, as we use them for business and need this info. *** APPLE!

Sonny, mine on Verizon reverted to the prior full display on Sept. 24, 2 days after my last comment here. No iOS update, it just was corrected, no settings, tech support or anything on my end. My phone is again displaying #, City and State instead of United States for anything not in my Contact list. Much of it has been robocalls lately, which makes Caller ID very significant in screening. Large for me. Not sure where the responsibility lies... I'm thinking Verizon. Apple should know...

I have the same issue after ios 10 update, I am on tmobile. But when someone calls me from land line it shows city and state, only calls from cell phone say united states.

Well prior to this you still would not know if someone who called you from cell phone was local or not, so for example if I am from Los Angeles and moved to Dayton, OH and I called you, it would still show you Los Angeles, CA on caller id, its associated to the phone number and not persons location. Sate and city id still works for someone calling you from landline.

Of course, the phone # travels with the phone, but it offers the originating location, as does landlines, rather than United States, unless Caller ID is blocked, in which case I ignor. If not in my phone book, everything is again showing # and originating City and State. I havent had anything show "United States" since Sept. 21, nor did I ever see that prior to the update.

The 800 and 866's come in as "unknown", I ignor those, check the message later and usually block. I never answer anything non-local I don't recognize anymore.Theoretically my # is not supposed to be listed (Verizon?) but I'm getting automated stuff several times a week.

At any rate, this glitch was only present for a couple of days and "self-corrected". I'd check with T Mobile on this, Denis

In my opinion I like this better, because now you can tell if some calling you from cell phone or landline.
