Q: iOS 10: iTunes Remote.app 4.3 Crashes iTunes When Selecting 2nd Airplay Device

iPhone SE, with iOS 10 and iTunes Remote version 4.3 (updated 9/15/16).

1. Launch iTunes Remote on iPhone

2. Select homeshared iTunes library (iTunes 12.5.1.21, iMac ~2012, OS X v 10.11.6).

3. Open airplay menu

4. Select second device in addition to iTunes (in my case, it was an Airport Express)

iTunes on the iMac immediately crashes.

This started happening with iOS 10. It was not fixed with the recent Remote.app update.

Anyone else have this problem, or found a way to solve it?

Thanks.

I have the same problem. The same thing happens on my iPad as well. I am not sure if the problem comes from the iOS app or from the latest version of iTunes that came out at the same time.

I have also been having this problem, under the conditions and software versions you describe, but thought it was perhaps due to a Mavericks incompatibility (I'm not running current macOS/OS X version). I rolled back to the earlier version of the iOS Remote app I had saved on computer and it also produced the same iTunes crash.

Same here, since I installed iOS 10 and ITunes 12.5.. If I want to prevent iTunes from crashing I first have to start playing music on iTunes through the Remote app with output in my computer (MacBook running El Capitan 10.11.6), then switch to an Airplay connected device. If the Airplay was selected when paused, I first have to switch back to my laptop, start playing and switch back to the Airplay device. Even choosing the Airplay device while music is paused will crash iTunes, I first haver to start playing. It's a **** nuisance this.

My guess would be it's iTunes.

    same issue here.

for a workaround, I've been using stock Music app to connect to iTunes library and switch to other airplay devices. works fine, but I'd rather use Remote app.

also, it works fine by using iTunes itself while at my mac.

    macOS 10.12

    iTunes 12.5.1

    iOS 10.0.2

    Remote app 4.3

I have the same problem and have backed out to 12.4.3 iTunes on occasion when I get frustrated and it is crashing too much.  If you use the Music App you are streaming the music from your Mac to you phone and then sending it via your phone to you AirPlay device.  In my case my Airplay device is a Marantz preamp with a Outlaw Audio Amplifier and the iPhone has a maximum streaming quality of about 900Kbps according to Apple so I downgraded to 12.4.3 unit they fix this issue.

I think I have a workaround which I tested pretty thoroughly.  For me the problem only occurs if I switch from my Computer output to an AirPlay Device while the Music is paused.  If I play the music first and switch to an Airplay device then iTunes does not crash.  I can also pause the music and switch back to the computer and it works fine.  So the only time it crashes is if the music is paused first before I switch to the AirPlay device so my workaround is to start playing the music first before choosing an Airplay device.

Unfortunately this only seem to work with my Airport Express my Marantz Devices causes iTunes to crash.

Ignore the last post after 30 minutes of testing.  Doesn’t seem to matter whether I am using my Marantz or Airport Express eventually it starts crashing.  I did do a test over a 10 times to each of my Marantz SR6009 Receiver and AV7701 Preamp and an Airport Express.  I confirmed the following behavior works without crashing iTunes but you must follow these steps exactly.

Only Switch to an AirPlay Device while music is playing

Only Switch from an AirPlay device while music is paused

when using remote app, when waking the iPhone 6, it crashes iTunes on my Mac.  Running latest iOS, iTunes and Mac OS.  Crash data sent repeatedly to Apple.  No fix in site.  Typical of recent iTunes updates that actually degrade rather than improve the iTunes app.
