Q: stop ios 10 update

I got up this morning. Read my email. Looked at a few news sites then took a shower. When I went to my computer there was no bandwidth. Checked the router, my iPhone 6s plus, was suddenly downloading iOS 10 (auto is not on so it's doing it without my permission or any requests). I can not find a way to stop it, so I placed it in airplane mode. This turns my iPhone into a useless brick. I can find no way to stop the download which will take all day because of it's size assuming it doesn't get a fault, which always occurs.

How do I stop the update?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 9.3.5

    Hi TheBish,

I see that you're posting because your device has started downloading the iOS 10 upgrade, but you're not ready to install it. I can understand needing some extra time to get a major upgrade installed. I'd be glad to help out!

If the installation has not already begun, you can remove the existing download of the update using the following steps:

    1. Go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage. Under Storage tap Manage Storage.
    2. Find the iOS update in the list of apps.
    3. Tap the iOS update, then tap Delete Update.

The update downloads in the background. The actual installation will not occur unless you agree to the terms and conditions and enter your screen lock passcode when prompted to authorize the install.

I do not want the update to install on my iPhone. I need iOS 9. I do not want to upgrade, but I keep getting annoying prompts to install iOS 10. How do I prevent this??? Yeah, I've deleted the download and it downloads again. Very annoying. I do not want iOS 10 on this phone. I need it to say iOS 9.

I think you can stop this by deleting the downloaded data.

    1. Open Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage
    2. Under Storage, tap Manage Storage.
    3. Look for iOS 10 Update or something similarly titled (it'll have the Settings icon next to it) and tap on it.
    4. There should be a red Delete option on this page. Press this to delete local data.

You should then be able to take it out of airplane mode and it won't download unless you check it for a software update and approve it.

I'd make sure that under Settings > iTunes & App Stores you have Updates toggled off under Automatic Downloads. Not sure if this would affect iOS updates or not, but can't hurt to check it!

Thanks for the suggestions. Most of the suggestions where focused on preventing the install after the download. Since I was trying to prevent the download, the solution was to put the iPhone into airplane mode. After two hours I checked the phone and the download application had given up and things were back to normal. The Download and Install button is back, requiring me to start the download myself.

With the iPhone in airplane mode, freed up the network so all the other device could gain access to the internet. I will download and install the new iOS when I can be without use of the network for many hours (if not the whole day), maybe while I'm a sleep (hoping for the best).
