Hi. Can you describe how AirPlay crashes in a little more detail? I'm a devoted AirPlay user, with iPad Air and ATV 4, and I'd notice any such behavior. Have you restarted the iPad since the update? Hold Sleep and Home buttons until you see the Apple.

I restarted both the Apple TV box as well as the iPad.

The "crash" is an immediate disconnection from mirroring on the TV through the Apple TV box.

VPN is now detected by some sites, which is also a change in iOS 10.0.2. The VPN works fine on my unupgraded Mac, so I know that the behavior is iOS based.

I've been in the IT business since the 70s, so trust me that these 2 issues are based on the code in iOS 10.0.2, making it an issue that Apple needs to resolve. I know of other people also suffering AirPlay issues similar to mine.

Just trying to help here. What are you trying to mirror? Does mirroring work for the iPad home screen? I have noticed that when you make the iPad video player full screen, mirroring switches to basic AirPlay. That makes sense since you don't really want the double letterboxing effect of fitting the 16x9 video into the 4x3 iPad, then into the 16x9 TV. However, basic AirPlay works by sending the video url to Apple TV, which then connects directly to the server. If iPad is accessing the server over a VPN, while Apple TV is not, that could be a problem. Could you please identify your Apple TV model and software?

Regarding VPN changes, Apple have removed support for PPTP VPNs in iOS 10, see Prepare for removal of PPTP VPN before you upgrade to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra - Apple Support. That may be affecting you.

I've been IT for 30+ years and your explanation about letterboxing simply is not true. I just mirror through Apple TV and run TV and movies at full screen resolution. There's never a letterboxing effect.

My Apple TV is the 3rd generation with the latest software (which Apple seems to no longer update).

VPN and AirPlay worked fine UNTIL I installed iOS 10.0.2 on my first generation iPad.

The issue is in the code in iOS 10. It is not a hardware issue nor a settings issue.

The same VPN and AirPlay work fine on my unupdated MacBook Air.

Hi. First, let's be clear that this is a user forum. I'm not disputing that these changes result from iOS 10, but there's nothing I can do about that. However, I may be able to help you work around some of these issues. You say your problems are not due to settings, but you should check to be sure the update hasn't updated them.

Now, regarding basic AirPlay vs mirroring. With due respect for your lengthy experience, I think you may be misinterpreting what you see. When you enable AirPlay mirroring and access a video in the browser, the TV screen mimics the iPad screen. If you play the video, you see it playing in its window. But if you switch the video player to full screen, the player on the iPad turns gray and displays "This video is playing on "Apple TV"", just as if you'd used basic AirPlay, not mirroring. The video on the TV changes to full screen, without the player controls, etc. When that happens, the Apple TV connects to the server directly. This can be a problem if the Apple TV cannot access the same route as the iPad, if the iPad is using a VPN, for example.

Regarding your VPN problems, as I mentioned, the implementation has been revised in iOS 10. You should check the settings in case they were changed by the update. If you're using a Profile, you may need an updated Profile for the new software. Since using a VPN may violate the iTunes terms, it's difficult to discuss in this Apple forum. You may find more info searching the web.

Don't try to derail this conversation by implying that I am doing something illegal using VPN. Many people, such as myself use VPN to harden their security on the internet. What is happening is plain and simple. Forget VPN. Airplay is crashing under iOS 10.0.2. There are no magic settings on the iPad or Apple TV that can resolve this issue. It is a coding issue within iOS 10.0.2.

If you are using a VPN on your iPad and not on Apple TV, the problem is that basic AirPlay sends the video URL to Apple TV, which connects directly to the server. If ATV cannot access the same routes as the iPad, it may not be able to reach the server, or the server may reject the connection. As I've already explained, when the iPad video player turns gray, it is using basic AirPlay, even if mirroring was initially selected. There is no way to override this. The only work-around is to allow ATV to access the same routes as iPad.

Since your configuration has revealed coding errors in iOS 10.0.2, you should report them to Apple here https://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html. However, you should be aware that AirPlay still works normally for many users, so the errors you observe are somehow related to your particular configuration.
