Q: Upgrading to El Capitan From Yosemite

I have a fairly recent MacBook Pro currently running Yosemite. I was going to upgrade it to El Capitan, but now it's offering me Sierra instead. I don't want to do this because of the risk that £500 worth of software (File Maker Pro 11, Final Draft 8, Office 2011) will stop working.

My desktop is running El Cap, and the above apps all work fine.

I see there is the facility to upgrade to El Cap, but it seems to be reserved for people running older versions. Do you think I can upgrade using that route? Or will it all go horribly wrong?

Thanks

Have you tried these steps: Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

There is a link on that site to download El Capitan installer from App store.

If you follow the link offered in Zvonimirs post you will get through to the El Capitan download. It may however, refuse to download because your Mac can upgrade to Sierra, silly I know.

You can use this page, https://roaringapps.com/apps?platform=osx to see if those apps are ok with Sierra.

Or you could ask at an Apple Retail Store if they would install El Capitan for you.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, the app store refuses to download it. Thanks for the roaring apps link, very useful. Most of my apps are listed as 'no information', so I will have to wait and see.

I have practically gone insane trying to upgrade from Yosemite to El Capitan. Apple seems to have ignored the needs of those that are slow to upgrade because of the various hardware/software configurations on their computers. I have a Mac Pro running Yosemite. I I also use Universal Audio UAD hardware, numerous DAWS and music applications and a lot of Audio Unit and VST plug-ins. IT will be some time before they are all compatible with Sierra. In the meantime I would like to avail myself of El Capitan and whatever improvements it brings to the table. But I can't - simply because I did not preveiously download El Capitan from the App Store. I can download 3 other versions of OS X -just not El Capitan. Stupid and frustrating. I forgot to add that I've already contacted support and they failed to render a solution.

Go to a Mac which is either running 10.6.8 or incompatible with Sierra and download it there.

Thank you, Eric. That solution is not open to me nor is it convenient to the numerous users that are in my position. I contacted Apple Support about upgrading the OS on a Mac Pro which is currently under Apple Care. I have a perfectly valid reason for not wanting to upgrade to 10.12 Sierra. They put me on a merry-go-round that led back to the same link every time. That is unacceptable considering our household loyalty to and investment in Apple since 2004. They should be able to email me a link that works or add it to my account in the App Store. I can download and install (or have install discs for) any compatible OS X version EXCEPT 10.11 at this point. I percieve this situation as a complete failure of Apple or, at least, Apple support. It should be in their interest for me to have a more current OS on my machine. Unless an easy path opens up for me to upgrade I will simply have to wait until all my audio hardware and software is qualified to run on 10.12 Sierra. Thanks-Lama (Richard Aylward)
