Q: What is the safest version of Java?

One of my macs currently uses a depreciated version of Java 6 with browser access turned off. Should I be safe? Will the version 7-8 offered by java themselves be more secure?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), Java

The more current a Java version is, the safer it is. However, that said there are some applications that will not work with the Oracle versions such as some Adobe products. Apple's Java 6 has had security updates in order to continue using it should you need to.

    Yes.

It is the browser plugin/extension that is a risk.

Normal applications written and n Java are no more risky than ones written in Objective-C, Swift, C, C++, etc...

Great, I'm trying to get Adobe CS5 to work so even though Java 8 is the safest in general I'd have to use Java SE 6, although this is still quite safe, just not as safe as 8/

I believe that Java SE6 cannot work in web browsers unless you go through terminal to override. Even once active for web you can simply disable plugins in your safari options to make sure there is still no web access to Java. Other than this there is no way to control Java SE 6 use as it doesn't have a control panel like versions 7 and 8. Is this correct?
