Q: Can't install Windows 10 on Bootcamp partition

#1

Hello!

I've just tried to install Windows 10 on my Macbook with a 32GB USB using Bootcamp. Everything was fine until I came to the part where I need to pick the partition where I want to install my Windows 10 and of course I've picked the Bootcamp partition but actually I couldn't click on "next" (I was so dumb and didn't formate it).
So I just formatted the Bootcamp partition and when I tried to click on "next" it just told me "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one". I went through google and searched everything about this problem and there are a lot of guys having almost the same or exactly the same "error" when trying to install Windows 10 on the Bootcamp partition but nothing actually helped me. I've already removed everything except my USB and someone told me I should only have 4 or less partitions.
It shows me 4 partition but there are two partition (3) and two partition (1).
Is that a problem?
Here's a pic of my diskutil list: https://i.gyazo.com/f554fb8aac609c2420f55f9696fa06a6.png

Since english isn't my native language I'm sorry for my bad spelling.
I hope anyone may help me installing Windows 10 with Bootcamp!

Thanks a lot! :)

You have a Fusion drive, which is typically not sold on a MacbookPro? Can you verify your Mac's year/model? Please do not post the serial number of your Mac.

If you have replaced the Optical drive to create your own Fusion drive, you may run into issues, depending on the model/year of your Mac.

Yeah, I had a 1TB HDD, bought an additional 256GB SSD and did a Fusion drive myself.

    It's a Macbook Pro 15' high res, mid 2012.

Did you create a BC installer using the first two options of BC Assistant?

Do you want to install Windows on the SSD or HDD?

    Please post the output of

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

First I've downloaded Windows 10 installer.iso from official microsoft site and then I pluged in my USB and followed the steps with BC Assistant,  selected my Windows 10 installer.iso and imported the installation files and windows driver to the USB. At last I've selected 200GB of my Fusion drive for my new Windows.

I don't really care but it might be more useful to use my HDD since I want to use all the space of my SSD for my main work and I'll mainly use Windows for playing games.

Is it even possible to choose between SSD and HDD when I'm using a Fusion drive?

Windows in Optibay drive does not work well and will give BSoDs very frequently. To make this work,

Do not try to boot OS X under any circumstances when doing this till step 7.

    1. Move the HDD to the Main bay of the Mac and disconnect the SSD SATA cable.

    2. Boot from the USB Windows Installer, and hold the Alt/Option to select the Windows icon from the USB (not EFI Boot).

    3. Install Windows fully including installing BC6 drivers and verify that Windows works.

    4. Shutdown your Mac, connect the SSD SATA cable in the Optibay. The SSD must stay in the Optibay. The HDD with Windows must stay in the Main bay.

    5. Reset NVRAM and SMC.

    6. Boot and hold Alt/Option key and select Windows and verify that it works.

    7. Now, since both drives are connected and in place, OS X knows the Fusion drive configuration so it should boot from the SSD. Test booting OS X.

    8. If both work, test switching between OS X and Windows using System Preferences and Bootcamp Control Panel and  test and verify.

Please ask questions, if you need detailed explanation.

    Thanks for your help!

Does that mean my Fusion drive is the reason why I can't install Windows on the Bootcamp partition?

Is it also possible to split up the Fusion drive, reinstall Mac OS X on my SSD and use the BC Assistant

to do the Windows stuff on my HDD?

Is it also possible to downgrade from Sierra to El Capitan?

    Best Regards.

No. The issue is the HDD in the Optibay with the BC partition.

Yes, but since you have the Fusion drive already working, I see no reason to give it up. A Fusion drive can also be created using an internal disk and an external HDD, if you really need to. Windows on HDD needs to be in the Main disk bay.

Is it also possible to downgrade from Sierra to El Capitan?

Yes. You need a Time Machine backup as documented in macOS Sierra: Revert to a previous macOS version .

Actually I don't understand what you mean with "Optibay" and "bay".. could you explain it?

Since I've just got this Macbook from my dad some days ago I haven't done any "Time Machine Backup".

Is it still possible to downgrade to El Capitan?

Is this the model you currently have MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2012) - Technical Specifications ? Does your model have a CD/DVD drive slot? On the OSX side, if you look at System Report -> SATA, can you post a screen shot?

Does your dad have a TM backup of the pre-Sierra configuration?

I don't have a Retina, it's a high res Macbook Pro and it has 16GB and a 1TB HDD instead of 8GB and 500GB HDD.

I have no CD/DVD slot because I've bought a additional 256GB SSD beside the installed HDD.

Yes my dad has a TM backup with El Capitan, but he's currently about 220 miles away .

I've decided to download macOS El Capitan from the app store, erase my current macOS Sierra and install El Capitan with my USB.

I've saved important files with dropbox and everything else is on my Home PC.

I'm also going to delete the Fusion drive and use the two partition separately.

Could you offer me any guide to install Windows with BC after installing El Capitan?

    Thanks a lot!

Did you replace the original Optical drive with a HDD? If yes, the drive slot/bay/connection from the Optical drive and where the CD/DVD drive used to be is called the Optibay (Optical drive bay). The drive slot/bay/connection from the main original drive is called the Main bay. It is highly recommended that SATA cables be disconnected from the disk side, not the logic/mother board side.

Your designated Windows disk must be in the main bay (it can be either SSD or HDD). You can run OSX from the main bay or the optibay. The second disk will be installed in the Optibay only after you have fully installed Windows.

You can put the SSD in the main bay, disconnect the SATA cable from the optibay and install OSX and Windows on this drive using BC Assistant as a normal installation. Once you have installed OSX and Windows, connect the second disk to the SATA connector in the Optibay. This is a standard BC/Windows installation. Follow BC Assistant prompts.

You can leave the disk in optibay as a separate disk, split it in half and create a Fusion drive with OSX and half the second drive and leave the other half for Windows, or you can format it as NTFS from the Windows side and use it only for Windows as you choose.

I guess my dad has replaced the original Optical drive with the SSD.

My new installation of El Capitan has just finished and I installed it on my SSD without Fusion Drive.

Is it now possible to use BC splitting my HDD and create a 200GB Bootcamp partition to install Windows

with my USB on it? Or will I get the same "error" like above described in the first message of this thread?

The moment you add the second disk, BCA will cause the same error. The BCA logic is driven by the Mac Model Identifier, not by the presence of two disks.

If you want the Windows installation on the HDD, put it in the Main bay, where the SSD currently is. OSX has no issues booting from the SSD, if it is in the Optical drive bay. If you want to use the entire HDD for Windows, put it in the main bay, and boot from the Windows USB Installer, and format the entire HDD as a Windows disk and leave it. Once Windows is functional, connect the SSD to the Optical drive bay SATA connector and test booting both OSes and switching.
