Does macOS Sierra replace Mac OS X El Capitan?

I currently have OS X Yosemite. I have been waiting for El Capitan to season a bit; to work the bugs out. Now, macOS Sierra is currently being touted. Is this an upgrade from El Capitan? Does this do away with El Capitan?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

For your Mac, yes it does "do away with El Capitan."

Once Apple releases the new OS, they remove the previous one from the App Store. If you had previously downloaded it, you can re-download from the Purchases tab.

However, since some Macs cannot run Sierra and you can't upgrade directly from Snow Leopard, those Macs can still download El Capitan.

Apple releases a new OS annually and development stops on the previous OS's, so El Capitan was fully seasoned months ago.
