I have the same problem. From 3 hours battery on El Capitan, nou I have only 1 hour 30 minute. The fan is going crazy, only in 4-5000rpm, 72-75˚C stays. I've tried the NVRAM but no success, I will try the SMC reset to see if will fix the problem.

Otherwise, we should try to clean install or to downgrade.

Yes. On my MacBook Air 2013 the battery drain is immense. Just browsing the web for about 35 minutes my battery percentage has gone down from 100% to now 51%.

My Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 13" has the same issue.
It was a "normal upgrade" to Sierra from El Capitan some days ago, Photos and Spotlight should be finished indexing but something seems to keep draining the battery (faster than on El Capitan).
On top of that constant battery drain while using the mac, the sleep mode seems to be messed up.
The first day after the upgrade I put the mac in sleep mode (with the App "DeepSleep") at around 65%. The battery was empty the next morning! Ok maybe DeepSleep does not work with Sierra, I thought.

The following day I left my mac in my friend's room and it lost ~50% of battery by just lying around (shut!).

My friend told me, that it did start up the fan and the HDD every 5 minutes, so I concluded that the sleep mode must have been interrupted.
I thought maybe some background process woke it up, so I killed some of them (KeepAwake, Boom2, Siri). I did also check coconutBattery which told me that my battery is still at 80% design capacity and doing well (exactly the same numbers as through the last year or so).

Then, I decided to make another test: I restarted the mac, killed every user-generated background process, turned wifi off, checked if Spotlight was indexing => no, checked the activity monitor => no extreme big CPU load /energy consumption and put the computer to sleep (with the sub menu of the little apple sign). Battery was 88%

ca. 5 hours later I came back to it and it was 44% and it woke up fast, so it was not in "deep" or "full" sleep mode.

If this will not magically disappear or be fixed, I think I gonna downgrade within the next week.
    (Sorry for bad English )

The restarting of SMC was solved the problem with warming.
Looks like it backs to normal state.
The battery looks better also, but -1 hour I think, then it was in El Captitan.

Any major OS upgrade involves a lot of housekeeping processes. This can take hours or even days, depending on data. I leave my Mac overnight before I try to use it.

Try doing a Safe Boot and see what the usage is like. This will avoid loading any unnecessary daemons and keep the OS "pure".

I have to agree, I did a SMC reset and the heat issue is gone and my battery now charges to 100%.  Will monitor over the new few days, but so far so good.

If the computers fans are running after updating to MacOS Sierra and the Mac feels hot to the touch, it’s very likely to because the Mac is indexing.

I installed macOS sierra from zero. and have the same issue. I have also the MacBook Pro 15" (mid 2015).

I decide to reinstall OS El Capitan.

I don't know if it is because I disabled Internet Sharing, but now after sleeping my MacBook Pro 13" is freezing (as in cold, not hanging). The HDD temperature is 35 C. It has been like that in the last couple of days. Plex is still running in the background. And so is Spotify, if that matters. I'm not sure if Plex was updated recently, though.

Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar.

Log in by holding down Shift key after entering password. This should disable your login items like Plex & Spotify.

Test without your login items running.

If you still have problems, restart in safe boot mode.

    *  shutdown

    *  start the Mac and *wait* for the startup chime to sound

    *  after the sound, press and hold down the shift key

    *  keep holding and *wait* until the grey  Apple logo appears

    *  now release the shift key and just wait (it could take a few minutes)

    *  eventually the login screen appears with the words SAFE BOOT

    *  log into your user while in safe boot mode and see if the problem goes away.

Agreed.  My MBA fan has been on a lot since updating to Sierra.  I noticed "photoanalysisid" is consuming 100+% of the CPU.  Apparently sucking down more than a single core while analyzing my photo library.  Since I have over 20K photos this could take a while.

Thanks, but I'm afraid I didn't express myself well. I meant that I don't have the issue anymore. Apart from Internet Sharing everything else is running like when it was getting quite hot while sleeping with the lit closed.

Then if it may help immediately after one of the times it was hot I opened a Bug Report with Feedback Assistant, which collected the sysdiagnose log. Hopefully Apple will work on that because the problem is there. I'm not sure why it disappeared on mine, Internet Sharing never caused an heating issue. And I installed macOS Sierra since the first beta, so sure in my case it wasn't an indexing problem.

My 2013 macbook air has the similar problem.

The spotlight indexing process is the culprit. I unload it and also turn off siri.

I have a 2010 I7 17" MacBook Pro and have recently upgraded to 1 TB SSD and replaced both cooling fans as one was out and "Darn Hot" on mid to top left corner and "don't leave you hand there" hot on the corresponding bottom.  After replacing the fans, everything was slightly warm if that. Then two weeks later switched to Sierra. Can't place my hand on bottom it's so hot and all of the left side of top of the machine is hotter than past observations.  Have followed the suggestions below and saw improvement for a day but now it's back and nothing seems to work.  Any typing seriosly lags as though something is running but darned if I can find it.  Getting a little concerned as I don't want anything to happen to my sweet thang.  Any additional suggestion would be greatly appreciated.  Sorry for the detail.
