Q: Will my Apple apps still work when I upgrade to El Capitan?

First, I apologize if this is posted in an inappropriate category. I wanted to post in Mac Apps but it was blocked.

I have a late 2009 13" MacBook Pro. I will soon be upgrading to El Capitan (saved on a bootable drive) from Snow Leopard (doing a clean install on a new SSD). I know that new versions of Safari, iMovie, Garage Band and Photos comes with El Capitan. But will my older 2009 apps such as iMovie HD, iDVD and others still operate when I make the upgrade?

What about iTunes? I just checked it and it says it's current at version 11.4.

Are there any apps I will have to re-purchase?

Finally, I know a lot of folks don't really care for Photos compared to iPhoto. If I don't like Photos, can I just transfer over my current version of iPhoto from my Time Machine backup?

Thank you for your help.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009), Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.26 GHz Intel core 2 Duo, 8 GB RAM

Safari does get updated, and Photos comes with El Capitan, but iMovie and Garage Band do not come with the OS. They are all separate purchases. El Capitan does not delete the old versions, and most still work, including iDVD. However, the current version of iMovie doesn't export directly to iDVD. You have to export a movie in 720p and import it into an iDVD project.

Finally, I know a lot of folks don't really care for Photos compared to iPhoto. If I don't like Photos, can I just transfer over my current version of iPhoto from my Time Machine backup?

You must have iPhoto 9.6.1 to run on El Capitan, so you must update it prior to upgrading to El Capitan. It will continue to run as long as you have that version.
