I just found this on an other forum: "Music Rating Widget" works fine and is quite easy to use. Could be a solution until Apple decide to activate the star rating again in a next release...

Still having to go out of the Music app is at best a workaround and definitely a regression.

Hello, I stopped at the Apple Store to ask how to fix this and the woman showed me this same post, well I wrote to apple and wonder if they read this forum so I'll paste the same message just to make some wave.

I hope they resolve this issue.

Hello, very disappointed once again with you guys messing with what was once the best music player in the industry. If you want innovation go back to what my iPod did ten years ago, call it retro and you get to please the Pandora generation as well. This is the only reason I'm still with an iPhone but I find myself listening to Spotify and Amazon music, with by the way is free as part of my Amazon prime. My iPhone 7 upgrade depends on how you guys fix this issue really.  I can listen to Spotify on Galaxy 7  just the same and carry my iPod 4 without updating it. But I trust that you fine folk keep us happy. Thank you in advance.

Following on from my last post for my new (alternative) workflow to get around this I just discovered a new issue (at least if you are using iTunes on Windows).

Tracks I want to rate as two stars I said I would mark as dislike. Then in iTunes I would mark those as 2 stars.  Well at work I use Windows so I have iTunes on that so I can occasionally update the ratings during breaks.  I just discovered that the current version of iTunes for Windows (12.5.1.21) does not recognize and understand dislike.  While it will display this dislike as a line though a heart, if you click on the heart it will toggle between Loved and off.  There is no way to set Dislike.  Secondly, I cannot create a smart playlist for the dislikes as there is no option in the filter selection for selecting dislikes.

So, the only way I can rate these is to have a recently played playlist and then manually find the dislikes (as I can't filter for them) to then rate them.

So much for "it just works..."
