Q: CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

  • Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

iPhone 6s, iOS 10

I have a 2014 Lexus IS250 and an iPhone 6 Plus and initially had the same problem. I don't use Apple Music though, I use Amazon.  I finally got it to work after:    1. Forgetting the bluetooth connection on both my iPhone and car.  2. Turned off iPhone and car. 3. Turned both back on. 4. Re-initialized the connection between car and iPhone. 5. Made a call through the speaker on my car.  When I hung up from the call my music started playing through my speakers.

Now when I get in my car, it takes about 3 minutes before I can hear my music through the car speakers.  Weird! Also, the connection blanks out every now and then.

The thing is, I called Apple about this and they told me I needed to take my car in for an upgrade. Really, my 3 year old car is now no longer able to communicate with my $870 phone just because I upgraded the IOS??? Totally not acceptable Apple!

I have used mine and my wife's iPhone 4s, 5, and 5s (still waiting on my 7 Plus) on my Toyota Sequoia bluetooth with minimal, if any issues. As soon as I installed iOS 10 (which actually runs great on my aging 5s), Bluetooth will work only for playing back music. As soon as I attempt to make a call, the head unit says what is occurring, but no audio passes. I went so far as a full reset on my iPhone, deleting all devices on my Toyota, and starting from scratch. I did that a few times in different combinations (i.e. only enabling phone not music, etc.). Nothing over the phone seems to work now. I did get it to play back audio from visual voicemail, but after the full reset, only music works. I have seen where other Toyota/Lexus owners are complaining of connection or phone issues on iOS 10, if anyone finds a solution, please speak up! Please note, as a test, I was able to pair a friends 4s and it works fine... The ONLY change was moving to iOS 10. Will test our 7 and 7 plus when they come in, if no go, they will be returned.

I love Apple devices, I love their stock, But I AM NOT replacing my $50k+ truck or the $2,500 entertainment system (granted it came with other extras) to use a shiny new iPhone. FIX THIS APPLE or I am done with iOS and my family as well.

I've had an Alpine Carplay in my Wrangler now for 2 months and for some reason the playlists on the Alpine are not in the same order as my iphone.  Very frustrating!!  I looked into it on reddit an they said to a reset all settings.  Did that the only thing that happened is I got frustrated I had to redo all my settings and the playlist problem still exists!!!  Apple are you reading these **** strings?!

I have a '17 Honda Accord and have much of the same issues as stated on here....Music app plays the song, however, the controls (except for volume) are frozen from 45-53 seconds, then I can go forward and backward a track, or play/pause. However, once I do move forward and backward a track, it freezes again. I've tried using different cords (Apple & third party) completely wiped my phone and reset it and still no joy. Carplay and the previous iteration of iOS 9 worked well together, so something happened with iOS 10. The question I have and can't seem to find, who is responsible for updating the CarPlay software on the car...Apple or the manufacturer. I can't find anything on the Web about Honda updating any previous version of CarPlay (if a previous version exists).

@chaz311, Carplay is actually completely on your mobile device.  The infotainment system on your car allows it to display and interact with some features of your phone without having to hold it physically.  Apple obviously is responsible for the OS on the device and our car manufacturers are responsible for updating the infotainment systems in our cars. Unfortunately, car manufacturers are not as quick to do so (and many times don't at all--hence my 12 Mazda 3 and its Codec issue [not an Apple issue at all]).  Clearly, there is something in iOS10 that our infotainment systems need updating (or Apple may have some tweaks to make things more stable in future releases).  Apple can't make an OS for each car's system.  It's up to the vehicle manufacturers to jump up and provide updates and easy ways for us to do so that do NOT involve bringing the car into the dang dealership for several hours. A simple download to a SD card an well written instructions (step-by-steps) would be optimal.

True Apple is not responsible for software on vehicles developed by other parties.  However, they do have some responsibility to make sure their IOS updates don't cost their customers money. We're not using outdated phones or cars. My day doesn't need to be totally consumed by spending time trying to get a new IOS to work.

I rolled back from iOS 10x to 9.3x and ALL carplay functions work fine.  Totally frustrated c/ iOS10x , spend a week doing all the types of reboots, but by rolling back to iOS 9.3x  i'm a happy camper once again and will not upgrade/downgrade to iOS 10.  The solution is to rollback to 9.3x.  OUT.

I have a similar problem with my iPhone6 and iPhone6s in my 2016 Sonata.  Siri says who sent the message then goes silent. I need messages to read as I travel for work.

No. In fact now every time I get in my car if I want to listen to music from my iPhone 6 Plus running 10.0.2 (the latest available) I have to make a phone call first.  Then when I hang up the music will play through my car system. Honestly, I don't think anyone cares.

So I have a 2016 Honda Accord EX-L and noticed something strange after updating to iOS 10 on iPhone 7.  When I have Carplay enabled at times I cannot control the volume.  Never had any issues with iOS 9 but that was on an iPhone 6S.  I use Synology DS AUDIO app which connects to my NAS at home.  Doubt it has anything to do with the the Honda software.  I guess the problem is on a larger scale.  How the heck can Apple test Carplay with each car manufacturer?  Hoping for a fix in iOS 10.1.  Seems like there are multiple issues with various Car Manufacturers since the iOS 10 release.  Also, anyone else bummed about the lack of apps compatible with Carplay?  How cool would Find My Friends be in the car?  Overall, in my opinion Carplay is a bit of a letdown.

Quick Fix: Im not sure if this is merely a temporary fix or if it will remain working. I just laid my finger on the power symbol on the side of the screen and all problems seem to have been resolved... for now. I held finger down for around 5-10 sec and it let me choose to reboot it.

iPhone 6 Plus:  Ever since I updated to iOS 10, CarPlay has been a totally wonky disaster.  I use a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX headunit.  Problems include the phone slowing to a crawl with only Spotify open (for instance, you can see the phone lag so hard the album art appears a frame at a time as it appears on the phone), glitchy audio, random disconnects, and when playing a song often times the music still plays, but the part of the screen on the stereo where the song info appears goes totally black (the home button and network/signal strength info remain), and then the info comes back on the screen, disappears, goes black, reappears, over and over again.  Sometimes my receiver will just totally lock up and I'm unable to use the steering wheel or head unit controls until I reboot the phone completely.  None of this happened on iOS 9.x.  Steve Jobs would have fired the idiots responsible for this lack of testing and oversight. Totally unacceptable.
