Q: Two-page view not working correctly in iOS 10

I upgraded my iPad Air 2 to iOS 10 tonight, then went to continue reading a book I bought recently via iBooks.  The two-page view, when the iPad is in landscape mode, will not appear now - unless I make the font really small.  If I increase the font size while in landscape to something more readable, I only get a single page view.

I deleted and re-downloaded the book, but the behavior is the same.  I signed into iBooks on another iPad that's running ios 9.3.5, and the two-page view works correctly, with normal font sizes - sizes that will not let me view the same book in two-page mode on iOS 10.

Apple - help!  I really prefer reading with two-page landscape mode in iBooks.  I can't, however, seem to get this to work with anything but tiny fonts.

Has has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, reducing the font size to minuscule does the trick. But OMG. This new anti-feature makes me so (surprisingly) angry! ***** the joy out of reading with iBook. If iBook is still this way by the time I finish reading it, the current book I'm on will be the last I ever buy through iTunes/iBook. Can't imagine why they would go to such the trouble to actually downgrade theie users' reading experience. Shame on you Apple. You're supposed to better than this.

Hi. As stated by another forum member, I have managed to get it into two page view by changing the font. I changed it to Palatino, without touching the font size and it worked. I think if you have fiddled with the font size you will need to quit out of iBooks and then open it again, don't touch anything and then change the font only. Hope it works for you. Apple needs a good boot up the proverbial for touching this.

    Best Regards

    Steve

Thanks for bringing this up.  I have the same problem, and getting the font small enough for two columns makes it too small for me to read.  Unfortunately, my fix is to buy my books on Amazon and use the Kindle app on my iPad.  I left a message on Apple support, so hopefully they'll fix this.

I hadn't noticed this problem. My iBooks view in iOS 10 was still two pages in landscape mode. My wife's iPad, same thing--two pages. But my parents complained that they were getting only a one-page view. After some testing, I found that it has to do with the font size. On all four iPads by adjusting the font size larger, I'd reach a point where the view would switch to one page. By making it smaller, I'd eventually reach two pages. In one instance, on one book, changing the type face caused the two-page view to flip back to one page. Reducing the font size down by one step brought it back to two pages.

You folks that claim making the font smaller isn't working, you do realize you can keep hitting the reduce button, right? You're not treating it like an either/or "big or small" are you?

I got the impression that everyone here saw that making the font smaller brought the two-page view back but that then, the font was too small to read comfortably, for some people at least. And for me too.

The whole point of this discussion is that it's difficult to get a two-page view with a large enough font. Also, it was clear from the beginning that changing the font face can help. I found an acceptable spot with the font Charter where the size is just one step smaller than the one that switches to one-page view. But for some, it's probably still too small.

Anyway, it was really stupid to remove this basic customization, especially for a company that seems to consider "accessibility" as important. Was it an accident or done on purpose? We'll never know.

I think everyone has figured out that you can get the two page view by reducing the font size. However, that makes the font too small for comfortable reading for some of us. I have managed to find a combo that is workable for now, but I'd like to have option to have a bigger font with the two page view sometimes, especially when my eyes are tired. I have left feedback for Apple. Hopefully, they will update ibooks soon.

Changing the font did not work for me.  Even using Palatino as soon as I raised the font size I lost the two-page view.  I did send in a report to Apple at the link someone provided above about this problem and I hope they will offer an option for people to choose the view they prefer like the Kindle app does.

As for now I have re-installed IOS 9 on the iPad temporarily until hopefully they come out with a fix for this.  From what I understand you only have a few days after installing IOS 10 to revert back to IOS 9.  After that the last updated version of IOS 9 (I believe it is 9.3.5) will become unsigned and you will be locked into IOS 10.

Yes and I wish Apple would sort it out and give us back the two page option at any font size

So basically I'm reading more in the Kindle app which does have this feature. That app is getting better while ibooks is getting worse. I hope everyone reading this sends feedback to Apple.

What the heck, Apple? After upgrading to iOS 10, I no longer have the ability to read books in a two-column view. No recommendations given here (changing font size, changing font) work to change the text from one to two column.

Seriously, given the high sophistication of your products how could something so user-unfriendly slip by in iOS 10?

Please fix this bug. Thank you.

I've a nasty feeling that Apple will not fix this no matter how hard we all moan about how poor it is.

I believe they are convinced that they know much better than we do exactly what we need and nothing will change their mind set.
