Q: Where has the Bookmarks Menu gone?

In Safari 10 I can only add bookmarks to the 'Favorites' section or to bookmark folders I created myself. I can't add them to the Bookmarks Menu anymore since that apparently has disappeared? Is this a bug? Now I can't add my bookmarks to the 'root' of the list of bookmarks anymore. My bookmarks section contains a list of bookmarks folders and some bookmarks in the top location that I haven't put in such a folder. I used to select Bookmarks Menu to add those and later decided whether I want to move them to a bookmark folder. But now that Bookmarks Menu option has gone. It isn't anywhere between my custom folders either. So where has it gone?

Open the Bookmarks Sidebar, then click and hold the URL, then drag it to Bookmarks.

This has just started happening for me too, and with no known updates.  If I click and drag the URL to the bookmarks sidebar, it goes into either the Favorites folder (and then also shows up in the bookmarks bar below the URL at the top, which I don't want), or gets put into whichever folder I happen to be near when I let off the pad.
I want to be able to add them to the bookmarks list, but not in a folder, and not in the Favorites folder either.  This is something I've been able to do for years, but no longer.

Did you try dragging it to the bottom, below the folders?

Hover your pointer over the address bar and you'll see a " + " appear. Click on it and you'll see your entire Bookmarks folder structure. If you don't want to add to an existing sub-folder select the root=level folder (Favorites in my example).

As Eric pointed out, you can also use the bookmarks sidebar. If you want to add the new website grab the favicon icon in the address bar and drag it to the Sidebar. You can add it to the root level (or between any other folders) by dragging further left than the folders.

Eric, yes, I can do that, but it requires that I first scroll down below all the folders I've created over time, and is just a bit clunky.  I also have 30-40 bookmarks not in folders and I prefer the newest get added at the end, as they were done automatically previously.  In the past it was much more simple: click Bookmarks, then Add Bookmark (or Ctl+D), and there it was -- Bookmarks Menu.

Did you try Rysz's suggestion? That also works for me.

Rysz, well that brings up another issue I hadn't realized I had.  When I hover over the address bar and the "+" appears, I don't see my bookmarks structure at all.  What happens is the address bar changes to say "Add page to Reading List", as if that's the only option available to me.  If I click the "+", it just adds the page to my Reading List; I don't ever see a dropdown.

And I could swear I used to have buttons on the far left that were quick links to the Bookmarks, Reading List, and Shared Links; that's no longer there.  Instead is only Show Top Sites button.

Try Rysz's suggestion, but when hovering over the +, try click and hold to expose the menu in the screen shot.

Eric, thanks for the tip to hold after clicking; it works great; what I tried before was just clicking without holding.  But now, interestingly, it brings up MORE options than when I go the other route to add a bookmark.

First, this is what I see using my regular route of Bookmarks, Add bookmark (or Ctl+D), then clicking the dropdown under "Add this page to":

    Screen Shot 2016-10-07 at 9.47.16 AM.png

But using the "+" hover/hold, I get MORE OPTIONS -- similar to what I had before.  I can't get a screen shot, but in order, it lists:  "Add to:  Reading List; Top Sites; Favorites; Bookmarks" and then lists my folders.

The Bookmarks option is what I've been using all along, and that I am no longer seeing using my regular route.  So why, I wonder, does it show using one method but not the other?

You are welcome. You aren't the only one seeing this. Apparently Apple changed it for some reason.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.
