Q: Safari on iMac very slow?

I'm running OX Yosemite 10.10.5- because it crashes if I try and update it.  I have a antivirus program on it and I suspect this is the problem?  I often have to force quite Safari.... especially on FaceBook.  I've had a virus - or so it says.... My memory has plenty of space to update but I'm afraid to because I get the white screen of death.... and it won't do anything most times without having AppleCare to reboot it.  It seems to only download part of the update.  Any idea why Safari is acting so strange?  Also how I could go about updating without completely loosing my computer? I could sure use some help ---- Thanks in advance!!!

ANY (no exceptions) anti-virus program will significantly degrade Mac performance and many will specifically cause Safari issues. Some can some security packages for online banking.

So we can be sure what is installed, you can safely give us a snapshot of your software config. Please download and run this free utility:

    http://etrecheck.com

It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data. It does no repairs but rather reports potential issues for evaluation.

Run the program and click the "Share Report" button when it finishes. Choose "Copy to Clipboard" from the resulting menu. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance or causing overheating.

I've had a virus - or so it says....

Please read Phony "tech support" / "ransomware" popups and web pages for a description of, and the solution to, this common scam.

I have a antivirus program on it and I suspect this is the problem?

Non-Apple "anti-virus" programs are categorically worthless. Get rid of whatever product you installed, even if it is not related to your original complaint. Be sure to follow its instructions, assuming you can find them and that they actually work. If you cannot find its own legitimate uninstallation instructions, please write back and identify the product you are using. Incorrectly uninstalling programs that modify OS X will cause unexpected results that can be difficult to fix. It would be a good idea to back up your Mac before making any modifications to its file system. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

That leaves your original complaint, which is that Safari is slow. If it remains slow even after eradicating the non-Apple "anti-virus" program you are using, please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support.

A plethora of adware has been installed on that Mac. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.

For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware.

Click the [Remove] links to remove adware.

    Did you try that?

Remove the useless "Avast" junk by using its uninstaller, which will remove it completely.

    Hi John,

Thanks for all your help!  The problem now is that I cant  remove the adware because I don't not have a backup  program.  I also cannot find an uninstall for  the anti-virus!  Is there a good  adware program out there?  And how do I get rid of the Avant?

    Thanks so much!!!

To uninstall "Avast" you need to use the uninstaller program that was included with its downloaded installer program. Its disk image file (with extension .dmg) may still be in your Mac's Downloads folder, so look for it there. If you no longer have it, obtain it from Avast's website. I am unable to provide more guidance than that, due to the variety of products they offer.

Do not use a generic third party utility to uninstall software due to their potential to cause additional problems.

Allegedly, you can use EtreCheck to uninstall the adware, but beware that (1) I have not attempted to use that technique, and (2) if you value the information on your Mac, you must absolutely create a backup prior to making any changes to it. A backup is a fundamental prerequisite, regardless of your chosen method to remove adware. Time Machine is only one backup option. For others please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/.

I don't advocate using third party products to uninstall products installed by other third party products. Due to the nature of adware the potential for error is too great. I advocate using the Finder to uninstall adware, but even I won't do that without a backup. If you want instructions for using that technique please write back.

    Hi John,

Thanks again for all your help.   I found the uninstall  and got  Avast off.  My Mac is a bit faster, but even typing here it's horribly slow.  I read all the stuff you sent me to, and I do have time machine - I even have an external hard drive but I cannot use it.  It's got a cord missing.  Is there a specific external hard drive that you would recommend?  I've somehow got to get this adware off of here - and restore this machine.  I cannot afford a new one.  I've got plenty of memory left besides.

I was wondering how it was that when I looked at something it was then in the advertising!  That just seemed a bit too bizarre!  Are my Safari extensions causing my mac to slow down too?  Also I suppose the programs that are supposed to remove adware are useless?

When I tried to remove the adware it wouldn't let me.  I rejected the attempt.  It said that I had not created a back-up and made me click ok - and it did this over and over.

    Thanks again John.

    Hi Gina,

The slowness is almost certainly due to the adware "Trovi" and "Spigot". There are a number of ways to get rid of it, but the prerequisite for a backup is a must. It's also a personal requirement of mine. I don't do anything without a backup plan, and I recommend you don't either.

You can probably use your existing external hard disk drive to create a Time Machine or other suitable backup. If all you need is a USB cable, they are so inexpensive it's not much of an exaggeration to say they're practically free. I just can't tell you exactly what cable to get because it depends on the model drive you have.
