Q: Pause Podcast to listen to it later - starts over instead of keeping my place

When I pause a podcast and go back to it later on, it starts from the beginning, not where I left off.

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2

    Hello  Dmcguire17171717,

Thanks for your question.  When you pause a podcast, the Podcast app is supposed to remember your playback position.

    About the Podcasts app

Podcasts remember your playback position, so you can start listening to a podcast on your iPhone, pause it when you get home, and pick up right where you left off on your Apple TV (4th generation).

By default, the Podcasts app syncs subscriptions, stations, and playback position between your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV (4th generation).

My first suggestion would be to reposition the scrubber in the place that you want in the podcast, quit the Podcast app and restart your iPhone.   Does the issue persist?

If so, can you take a look at the questions below and reply back with your comments?

    • Have you backed up your iPhone 6?
    • Have you updated your iOS to the latest version?  (Your profile indicates iOS 9.2).
    • Is this behavior only happening with one podcast, or does it happen with all of your podcasts?
    • Are you syncing podcasts between devices?  Is it possible that you started at the beginning of this podcast on another device?
Dmcguire17171717, we look forward to receiving your feedback.

Enjoy the rest of your day!

    Hi Starr.C,

    Thank you for your feedback.

I have tried your first suggestion - the problem still exists.

    Answering your other questions:

    • Have you backed up your iPhone 6? Yes
    • Have you updated your iOS to the latest version?  (Your profile indicates iOS 9.2). Yes, I updated to iOS 10 as soon as it was available.  Currently, I'm using 10.0.2
    • Is this behavior only happening with one podcast, or does it happen with all of your podcasts? It happens with all my podcasts
    • Are you syncing podcasts between devices?  Is it possible that you started at the beginning of this podcast on another device? I only listen to podcasts on my phone.

    Thanks,

    Denise

    Hello  Dmcguire17171717,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions.  You've confirmed the Podcasts app is not working as expected on your iPhone 6 with iOS 10.0.2.  Regardless of which podcast you play, the app does not remember your playback position as it should.

At this point I would recommend the following steps:

    1) Remove the Podcasts app from your iPhone.  This will delete the app and all of your podcasts.
    2) Restart the iPhone
    3) Download the app from your purchases in the App store
    4) Test one of your podcasts to see if this resolves the issue.

Remove built-in Apple apps from the Home screen on your iOS device with iOS 10

When you remove a built-in app from your Home screen, you also remove any related user data and configuration files.

Remove a built-in app from your Home screen

    1. Touch and hold the app lightly until it jiggles. If the app doesn't jiggle, make sure that you're not pressing too hard.
    2. Tap Remove on the app, then tap Remove.
    3. Press the Home button to finish.

Add a previously removed built-in app

    1. Go to the App Store and search for the app. Tap Download to restore the app.
    2. Wait for the app to restore, then open it from your Home screen.

    Take care.

    Hi Jeremy_v,

I did try that yesterday and it didn't work.  I broke down and contacted Apple Support, since this isn't the only issue with my app.  I think I'm going to have to do a restore.  I want to avoid it if possible, so if you can think of anything else that might fix it, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks
