Q: Login Screen Locks Up

Hi.  Since I upgraded to macOS Sierra, my early 2015 MacBook Pro freezes at the login screen.  I've tried clean install, reinstall, SMC reset, NVRAM reset.  Nothing seems to help.  I can eventually slide the cursor to the Shut Down button, but it takes a while.  Once it starts back up a second time it's fine... until I reboot or shut down again.  Any thoughts?  Thank you.

Try booting in safe mode (hold down the sift key while booting) a couple of times. Does the login screen freeze?

Hi Trevoz,  Thanks for the suggestion.  I should have mentioned that it doesn't freeze when I start up in safe mode.  But once I restart from safe mode, it freezes again.

I'm guessing you ran the Apple Diagnostics whichb has caused this  com.apple.installer.osmessagetracing.plist to load?

You're right, it looks pretty clean. Does the problem still occur if you setup a new user account and use that?

I haven't tried that, but I'm going to say yes because the issue happens prior to a user logging in.  I'm the only user and have just the 1 account.

I can tell when it's going to happen and when it's not.  The startup sound occurs quicker and the boot time is quicker when everything is going to work correctly.  It's almost as if a startup item is struggling, but then when I get to the login screen, keyboard and mouse inputs are incredibly slow to respond.  About every minute I can either enter a single password character or move the cursor, which I normally move to the power button to turn off.  Once it turns back on the system works just fine, but this process takes over 5 minutes.

OK. As it works in safe mode, it must be something that is loaded at startup. There's nothing obvious in the etrecheck report. If it was me, I would do this:

    0. Backup any important or personal files.

    1. Erase the disk and reinstall MacOS.

    2. Check if the problem is still present.

    3. If it is cured, manually copy your important/personal files back.

    4. If installing other apps, check if the problem has returned after each one before proceeding to the next.

Well, in my case, the issue was File Vault.  I disabled it and everything is working as normal.  I re-enabled it and the problem returned immediately.  I then disabled it again and all is normal again.  Strange!
