thanks very much. i seem to have been able to finally delete the 60+ GB of mobilsync or whatever files so things have calmed down a bit as i no longer have 0 KB available on the laptop...
can can i ask you how i would check this? i am on IMAP with a bunch of email addresses so taking care of archiving old email (somehow) may be the next matter i need to take care of. not really sure how i should be tackling this though. obviously this is not a problem on the desktop but it is taking up space apparently on the laptop...

so that was a bit of a revelation. i think the short term solution was to get this laptop some disk space so i could use it and now longer term cleaning up my email is definitely a need to do. i /am/ in the somewhat laborious process of mass deleting junk mail or unnecessary mail by sorting by FROM in the global inbox. i also have to organize some older mail so that it resides on the LOCAL FOLDER of my desktop machine so i can access it. currently i do have some outside of mail that i need to import. also some of the mail already in the LOCAL FOLDER needs to be "un-organized" in the sense that at one point i put things in discreet folders (say by year) and i am now realizing that dropping it all into a BULK FOLDER and using a SEARCH TOOL to access this is much smarter and less time consuming.
two other things: 1. i do have a venture subscription for this year so if it made sense to pursue some of this with them via technical assistance this is the reason i got the subscription. perhaps there are terms i can use to ask them to help me with? 2. i have researched the earlier links you gave me and they were great. so the stanford project and the third party software are items i may be looking at once i get the mail sorted in a way that allows me to take advantage of these tools in an efficient way.
i mean, just as a for instance the ability to access attachments visually would be YUGE over here.
long-winded answer to a shorter answer - 13 mailboxes with a total of 28,000 + emails.
THANK YOU
jon
