Q: Change login screen in Sierra

I wish to have a  picture that appears at login. How can I do this. Login picture used to be in the Caches folder but no more.

Please don't suggest changing wall paper in System Preferences as that is not what I am referring to, It is the login screen picture I wish to change.

Any help appreciated.

My login picture is in the Macintosh HD/Library/Caches folder, as it has always been.

    Check again.

Sorry there is no login picture in that location in Sierra. Is in El Capitan but not Sierra.

Are you looking in the correct Library?

    Screen Shot 2016-10-06 at 05.11.10.png

You could try making a png file with name com.apple.desktop.admin.png and moving it in to the above location

restarting and see if that works.

Have you tried a Spotlight search for the file in question?

In Sierra Login screen is located in /Library/CoreData/DesktopDefault.jpg that is a symbolic link to /Library/Desktop\ Pictures/Sierra.jpg You can overwrite it.

Thanks but there is no folder called CoreData in my Library? Very strange. Or what is a symbolic link?

It's not the ~/Library it is the /Library. They are two different places

Thanks for your patience and help. I am getting closer but picture renamed as Sierra.jpg did not show up at login. Showed up on the desktop!

I think you were given a bum steer

You need a .png file which is 1920×1080. It should be named com.apple.desktop.admin.png and it needs to be placed in the /Library/Caches/ folder. You might want to backup the existing file before you overwrite it.

Thanks but that advice no longer applies in Sierra. It worked in El Capitan. The image is not in the folder you referred to.

My Mac Mini begs to disagree with you:

    trev@macmini5 [/Library/Caches] $ ll

    total 552

    -rw-r--r--@   1 root           wheel       0 Sep 22 13:25 .com.apple.updateEFIResources

    -rw-r--r--@   1 trev           staff  564530 Sep 22 22:37 com.apple.desktop.admin.png

    drwx--x--x  816 _iconservices  admin   27744 Oct  6 09:52 com.apple.iconservices.store

I also checked the image and it is the one I get when I am at the login screen - blurred blue.

Hi, I think i have been confusing Library folders or something but you were right. I found the file, replaced it and it all worked. Brilliant, thanks a lot.
I am still a little confused as I usually don't dig this deep, not since the days of MsDos and AppleDos!

Some how my Alt key no longer shows the Library in the drop down in finder?

But hey you were right...and I appreciate it.

So I was right, you were looking in the wrong Library.

Just a note in Sierra whilst in finder in the Go menu clicking on the alt key no longer displays the Users Library.

If you want to display the Users Library permanently click on your Users/ Home icon in the Finder sidebar then click on View in finder and then Show Options, from there you check the Show Library Folder option.

It does for me. And it is live, too. I can hold and release the option key with the menu open down and it changes, showing or not showing Library (between Home and Computer).
