Q: Can't upgrade macOS BETA to final version

I'm currently running macOS Sierra BETA version 10.12.1 Beta (16B2338c)

I've downloaded the final version of macOS Sierra from the app store and attempted to install in over the BETA.

The error I receive is:

"You can't upgrade this version of macOS because a newer version is installed."

Which I don't think it is unless the BETA continued post launch. If so how do I install the released version over it.

This is a late-2011 macbook pro but I doubt that makes a difference.

Thanks,

Ash

The beta does continue and it apparently did on your Mac since it is 10.12.1.

Any time you wish to go to a previous OS version, you must erase the drive and reinstall. There isn't a way to install over a later OS.

Yeah I found out that BETA 6 was released to the app store and 7 is now installed on my system.

So I need to wait for a proper point release in the app store before upgrading. Do they bundle point releases into the app store releases? If not then the only solution would be to wipe or wait for the next OS...

Yes, the simple method would be to wait for the final release of 10.12.1, then remove yourself from the Beta program updates in the App Store System Prefs.

Hi!  I have the same issue and I suspect many may have, but have not noticed they are on 10.12.1 because they have not bothered to upgrade to the final release.

What I'd appreciate is ay info on the simplest way of finding out when 10.12.1 Final Release is available.  It would be irritating, having supported the last 3 public beta programmes, to be left with the only option to be random opening of the App Store to review the release number on the Sierra page.

PS. I **have** removed my laptop from the beta update path, but sadly later than I did so on my desktop which updated to 10.12.0 final easily (because I attempted that a few days earlier on the desktop, i.e. before the public beta had auto-updated to 10.12.1)

Do you not get emails notifying you when there is a new release?

Perhaps there is a setting that allows you to opt out, or at least get emails.

As everybody in the program have agreed to not discuss the program in a public forum, you should ask on the private forum set up for you (if there is one).

I have no idea if all of that is possible. I answered the original question based on how all released updates work, assuming it is the same.
