Q: Windows bootcamp - partition cannot be mounted

Hey all,

I have been using Windows on my iMac (late 2012, Yosemite 10.10.5) without a problem but today, after i booted MacOS Yosemite (for a simple file control), cannot boot back to Windows again. Didn't have any bootcamp problems before... haven't used any 3rd party disk utility either. The only thing recently I did was increasing Windows partition size 200GB by decreasing MacOS partition via Disk Utility (a month ago, no problem since then, till today)

1.   Windows disappeared from Startup Disk

2.   Disk utility shows disk0s4 greyed out and cannot be mounted. Moreover, the correct partition size was 700 GB but here its shown as 500GB (which was the old size before increasing it)

3.   When i try to reboot with ALT pressed, Windows shows up, but cannot reboot, with a black screen showing “a disk error occurred”

I am not very familiar with any more technicals. I only tried to install “Refind” but cannot succeed anything with it.

I tried your advice above and seems NTFS is there...

one more thing... when I try to verify disk0s4, says "it needs to be repaired". when i hit repair; it says this:

Need my Windows ASAP, what more should i do?

I haven't upgraded to Sierra yet. Should I? Or will it make worse?

I have tons of files on Windows that I need and unfortunately not backed up for awhile anywhere (very sorry about it now).

Please help...

iMac, null

and I know if it's meaningful but cmd+s & "fsck -fy" didn't do anything other than verifying Mac partition.

There are two different partition structures used to show two distinct views on a Mac running OS X and Windows. Using DU manipulates one, while the Disk Management in Windows manipulates the other. This is true for Macs prior to Late 2013 models.

Can you post the output of

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

What is "Macintosh HD 2" and how is/was it used? Please do not partition/modify this disk any further.

When I saw "microsoft basic data" as 500 GB instead of 700 GB (bootcamp size), I panicked and split Macintosh HD into 2 with disk utility: (300 HD1 + 200 HD2). I dunno why i did it but now it seems stupid. I haven't done anything else; HD2 sits still.

Some of the outputs are confusing. You show a NTFS header for disk0s4, but the file system is Apple_HFS according to diskutil list. In the first post, was the dd command executed before you created Macintosh HD 2?

    The commands are

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s5 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Correct, I created HD2 after the first post.... so it's rdisk05 now.

Much better. Do you want to keep the "Macintosh HD  2" for future use? If yes, we can create a 'special' version of the MBR and try to resurrect Windows.

doesnt need it, just trying to recover my thousands of files in Windows   my bootcamp was getting bigger but hasnt hit 500 GB yet. so hopefully that HD2 partition didnt erase anything.   i can accept loss of everything else but windows files.

We can do one of two things.

    1. Delete the Macintosh HD2 using Disk Utility and using the "-" function to remove it. Once removed, we can re-create the MBR to allow Windows to come up.

    2. Create a special 'stuffed' MBR, which will allow you to get to all your files and Windows to boot with the current layout.

Once you have the files, with Yosemite, we can clean up the disk with a Time Machine backup/erase/restore, and you can re-install Windows and restore files. Do you have just files, or Windows Applications as well? If you have applications, they will need to be re-installed if you clean-install Windows.

Either is ok for me, whichever will be shorter for you to explain.  I can do with 2 or 3 partitions, no problem.  If the 1st option is more reliable, please specify that one.   (Windows apps aren't important, can re-install them)

Option 2 is much quicker. Can you install GPT Fdisk - https://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ ? This will help us create the special MBR using the following steps to get Windows back up and running. We can then cleanup after you make a backup of all your files.

The steps you need, after GPT Fdisk (aka disk) is installed are in Re: [Help] Can't boot to windows (8.1) after resizing partition . If you need detailed explanation after you take a look at the link, please ask.
