Q: iOS 10 - iPhone and iPad app crashes

Since upgrading to iOS 10 (release versions) both my iPad and iPhone seem to crash many times regardless of the app in use. I will be reading an email and the screen goes to back with the 'wait wheel' rotating in the centre until it then asks for my TouchID or password to reenter the device. It will happen at random with other apps so it is not linked to a specific app or action. The iPhone is an iPhone 5S and the iPad is an iPad 4 (retina). Cannot see anyone else having this, but cannot believe that two devices exhibit the same issue at the same time and it is hardware related ...

Any comments/ideas?

    Hi Landshark2007,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Based on what you are describing (shutting down/restarting intermittently across multiple apps and services, across two separate devices), we may want to try reinstalling a fresh copy of iOS to help resolve (or at least rule out) any potential system software issues. Once iOS is reinstalled, you will want to give it some time to test and see if the issue persists or returns. The process is outlined in the following article under the section "If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up" (the article itself is aimed at a slightly different issue, but the steps outlined are still applicable in this case):

Note: While this process generally shouldn't affect your data or settings, it's always best to have a full backup of your data just in case. If you haven't recently backed up your device, you may also find this article helpful:

    Hi Allen A,

I've done all the normal stuff and the ones that you pointed me to, but still I get random restarts. I will keep researching and trying, but it is very hard to replicate Willow-the-Wisps that come and go without any common issue to trigger it.

    Hi Landshark2007,

Thanks for that. One option if you've already done the above would be to restore your devices to factory default condition, then set them up as new devices and not restore any of your backed up data and settings (just make sure you have a current backup to restore them to after testing). Testing them for a while in this factory default condition should give us the best determination whether the issue is with the devices & new OS themselves, or whether it may be some conflict with the data and settings.
