Q: Help needed to solve issues on iPad Air2 after iOS 10 update

Hey guys so this is my second post in the iPad forums regarding the same issues- haven't been able to sort them yet unfortunatel.

1) my iPad no longer supports Touch ID. even after restoring the device there was a "failure to set up Touch ID error" And every time I power the tablet on I get a notification that says "unable to activate Touch ID on this iPad".

When I do go into settings to set a new fingerprint I simply get a failure notification regardless of switching Touch ID access on/off (for iTunes/App store+ Phone unlock) like some support discussions suggest.

2) there is a general lag in the device, the sleep/wake button doesn't respond as it used to and most importantly when I power the iPad on it takes 2min30secs to get switched on- I actually timed it ! Prior to the update it merely took 15 seconds, my old laptop powers on faster than my iPad now !!!

I Restored my iPad and although all other functions are working, with lag however, but these two major things are bugging me a lot. They did not get resolved after device restoration.

How to resolve these issues please help !

iPad Air, iOS 9.3.5

    A few questions up front:

    1. What is the iPad capacity?

    2. How much space do you have left?

    3. Was the Touch ID clean?  (if not use a lint free cloth)

    4. Was the Touch ID (Home button) repaired?

    5. Was iOS modified before?

    1) it's the 64gb model with 46 gb still available

    2) yes I regularly clean the home button with a neat fabric

    3) the device has had zero issues since I got it in December 2014/ also Touch ID was working well in last software 9.3.5 I think it was.

    4) since  dec'14 I have updated the iOS whenever it was available without any problems whatsoever. I'm surprised  as to why Iam getting the errors on iOS 10.

Thank you for the suggestion Brian, but I got the device almost 2 years ago from the Apple store @ Fifth Avenue, NYC and I didn't get a proof of purchase, just a receipt I think which I'm sure I've misplaced by now. Regardless of that I live in Pakistan and we only have authorised apple retail sellers here, we don't have an official Apple Store unfortunately so my only hope is getting help from the support forum here.

    Ok, one at a time.

Follow the instruction to the letter.

    Set up Touch ID

Before you can set up Touch ID, you need to create a passcode for your device. Then follow these steps:

    1. Make sure that the Home button and your finger are clean and dry.
    2. Tap Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, then enter your passcode.
    3. Tap Add a Fingerprint and hold your device as you normally would when touching the Home button.
    4. Touch the Home button with your finger—but don't press. Hold it there until you feel a quick vibration, or until you're asked to lift your finger.

Note: Do it slowly, use all angles, even turn your iPad upside down to register the finger

         5. Continue to lift and rest your finger slowly, making small adjustments to the position of your finger each time.

         6. The next screen asks you to adjust your grip. Hold your device as you normally would when unlocking it, and      touch the Home button with the outer areas of your fingertip, instead of the center portion that you scanned first.

Note: Use all the edges of your finger, again also do it upside down in one of the scan.

If it fails you might have a hardware failure, you need to have it look at by the genius at an Apple Store. Make an appointment first.

I have already tried all of the above but I can't even get past the add fingerprint step as I get the error of failure to set up Touch ID , screenshot of which I added above. Even after restoration process when I was setting up my device I got the same error. And it's likely that im having a hardware failure like you said but why now after the software update ??

I live in Pakistan and we don't have any apple stores here, only retail sellers, so unfortunately I can't go to a Genius Bar and get it fixed.

    Is there no other way?

What about the second issue ? The taking way too long to power-on one?

Did you restore as new and NOT from your backup, and test?

Are you connected to the Internet using Wi-Fi directly when booting up?

Are starting an app also slow?

No I didn't restore as new, used back up.

I switch all apps/connections off before turning the device off. And yes the apps are slower too, plus there's a lag in pressing home button, entering passcode and unlocking device. I know almost everyone who has the new update is complaining of battery draining and slower devices much like myself but mine just has gotten way too slow for its generation of models esp on start up.

Shall I restore it as new? like I did with the iPhone and see how it goes from there ?

Make a backup on your iTunes just incase.

Yes restore as new and test, it might be your backup that is the issue.

Yes, don't forget to switch Settings > Find My iPad off before you restore as new without your backup.

Test it without loading any 3rd parties app.

So I restored the iPad as new but unfortunately nothing changed. Still facing same issues and I guess I'll have to get used to them hoping the next iOS update resolves them. Thank you so much for helping out on both my devices. God bless.
