Q: Time Capsule not working in macOS Sierra - Preparing for backup

Hi all,

Updated to Sierra last night on my MBP and today I'm sitting with a "burning hot" laptop on my knees and the message "Preparing for backup". Apparently the new OS does not see the time capsule as I can't view older backups either, although I can connect to the Time Capsule through the finder.

The strange thing is though that when I reboot both the connections to my Time Capsule and my NAS are not done automatically, I have to press enter when the dialog appears. Both however appear correct in my keychain.

So there's no way for me to backup my current installation and I cannot restore my previous version either. I'm rather underwhelmed by this new update to say the least as it has brought me problems instead of improvements.

Does anyone have a clue what I can do about the Time Capsule backup/restore problems?

Thanks!

Ron

I have the same problems since the early versions of Sierra, wrote several feedbacks to Apple. Unfortunately the final version and it's NOT been fixed. Backups with HDs and SSD are working fine but with TC not at all. It can't find the disk.

Have you tried to reselect the backup drive/disk from TimeMachine preferences dialogbox? Might be that you need to give a device password if you have on on the device?

I had tried it earlier on but just tried it again. And yes I had to enter a password.

Fingers crossed it will work. Mind you, last night it had done 6Mb in 12 hours....

    Thanks!

I fixed the connection but it won't Finnish the backup after hours "preparing"

    Many Tks

You should also consider to disable anti-virus programs - especially "Sophus Home" as it seems to not be working on macOS Sierra.

For a quick start on the backup go in to System Preferences for TM and click option button and add most of the main main folders on your drive. After the first backup then add them in one by one.

You should not try to stop the cleanup and verifying phase as it seems to block TM completely. Just let TM do a complete backup and then you should be OK again re. backups

Thank you very much Søren. Not finnished yet but so far working fine for TC.

Some problems completing 2nd back up. The SSD external now good again.

    Appreciate the help.

Had several problems with TM on Sierra, and now just realized that the automatic backup feature has stopped.

Have "Back Up Automatically" checked, but it has not taken a backup for the last 24 hours. Forcing one now, which seems to be working.

I've been struggling to get a backup going with TC too.  So much so that I've just purchased CC Cloner to make a backup.  Currently in the process of trying to reload the system to see where the problem might lie.  Saw the comment about Sophos so might try to see if that is indeed the problem as I rebuild the system.

Removed Sophos and suddenly I have a TC backup looking like it's got afterburners again.  Guess will have to wait until Sophos (or Apple) sort the issue out.

Irncpl hi. With the help of Søren the backups processes got back to normal but a week on similar problems returned such as not finding backup drives or TCs. I've 2 TCs, one USB3 SSD and one firewire 800 all on the same problem. One thing I noticed is many times the backup GBs  double the amount I have in my PB pro SSD, like, I have 300 gb and TM is informing  backing up 600GB and  more, it won't clean up old backups when disk is full.

Sierra is very buggy all over, also Photos crashing and Photo agents all the time can't use Photos, isn't syncing with iCloud or other devices, tried many things to no avail. I'm now on beta tester 2 release. and sending feedback to Apple.

So why are you still running the beta version? Use the current final version available from the App Store.

Søren and the new MacOS beta 3 fixed the problem, running smooth now.
