Q: Deleted Bookmarks and now I can only add to Favorites or Top Sites

Hi guys,

I was recently cleaning up my bookmarks, just using the Edit Bookmarks page, and something odd has happened: I have organised my bookmarks as such that they are there and visible, but when I try to 'bookmark' a page, the only options of where to add them are Top Sites or Favorites. Obviously I don't want to add everything here, and sometimes want to add just to the bookmarks dropdown, but this is no longer possible.

The only workaround I have seen is to 'Add Bookmark Folder', but this means my bookmarks aren't visible until I scroll down to this folder, and obviously this is not something I want.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Have you tried Safari/Bookmarks/Add Bookmark? Another way to add a Bookmark is to open the Bookmarks Sidebar, then highlight the URL, then click and hold the address while dragging it to the Sidebar.

Even when I select 'Add Bookmarks' from the bookmark menu, it only gives me the option of adding it to Favorites or Top Sites. I still have a whole list of bookmarks below the 'Favorites' folder, but I can no longer add any new ones to here.

    Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

This didn't work either, I'm sorry to say.

I'll clarify how the problem came about. After I installed the new OS my computer connected to the iCloud, and it uploaded a whole bunch of bookmarks I didn't want. Ones from different computers were formatted slightly differently, being indented on the 'Edit Bookmarks' page. I deleted all from one, and left all from the rest. And now I can't add to a 'Bookmarks' area with the rest.

I've got some pictures to help

    No Bookmark option.png

Here we can see how the only options are 'Top Sites' and 'Favorites'.

    Screen Shot 2016-10-07 at 10.30.07 am.png

Here we can see the beginning of the list of my bookmarks, where I used to keep them. But I am no longer able to add to this list.

    Example from my other computer.png

And here are my bookmarks from my laptop, where I am clearly able to add to 'Bookmarks' in addition to Top Sites and Favorites.

    Any thoughts?

    See Rysz's suggestion.

Where has the Bookmarks Menu gone?

Rysz's suggestion in the linked thread has indeed made me able again to add to this list of bookmarks again. However, I will not mark this as 'solved' as I can no longer do so by selecting 'Command + D', and the bookmarks are added to the top of the list, rather than to the bottom as before.

If anyone could give any further insight here this would be great.

    UPDATE

Having consulted this thread (missing "Add to Bookmarks" in Safari 10/macOS Sierra) I see that this is an issue with the new OS. They have, for no real good reason, deleted the ability to add bookmarks to your bookmark menu in Sierra. Very annoying. I hope they return this feature soon.

Did you try hovering the cursor over the left side of the URL until the + appears, then clicking it and holding until a dropdown menu appears?
