If you simply changed the email address associated with your Apple ID, you are the same "person" to iCloud.

You need to sign out and then back in with your newly updated Apple ID to update your Mac.

This does temporarily remove some of your iCloud content from the Mac only. That content will be restored once you have signed in again. Your content on iCloud is not affected by signing out.

If you created a net new Apple ID, you can only be signed in to iCloud with one account at a time. Therefore, only 1 iCloud Photo Library at a time.

i did simply change my email and yes i understand it sees me as the same person. I can handle everything else being temporarily removed and reinstated but its Photos that concerns me. All my photos have Tags and Faces and Albums in Photos on my Mac. Will i lose all that metadata?

You really have no choice. You must sign out of that older Apple ID, which will remove the synced photos.

If you sign in to iCloud.com and look at your photos there, you should see the Tags and Faces are shown on iCloud. This means that when you remove them from your Mac to do the Apple ID switch, this metadata is stored elsewhere and will be replaced during the re-sync.

as feedback, changed email, logged out, it 'deleted everything', logged straight back in... and faces seems to still be there. so i guess as its the same physical machine, as someone told me once that Faces DB seems to be machine located, and faces DB is kept

    Good to hear.

If you think about it, it makes no sense for any of that type of data to kept device by device.

The entire design of iCloud Photo Library is to keep content fully synced between devices.

Not much value if that was only certain bits of data. Functionality may be different between devices, but the underlying data will be the same.
