The most likely cause is the program that wants to use Java is only requesting the use of Apple's legacy Java 6. As the developers didn't care enough to have it use Java the correct way, you will have to install Apple's legacy Java 6 or uninstall the program that wants to use Java--most likely Adobe products or some Facebook Video chat program.

Download Java for OS X 2015-001

It may be that the program requires a JDK be installed instead of the JRE from Java.com. So, if you didn't download the Oracle Java Development Kit from Oracle's website, then you could try that so you could have a current version of Java. However, I don't think I've seen anyone report that as successful as the program needing Java was so poorly engineered.

Thank you Barney-15E that fixed it.  I am sure they will catch up with Java.  Appreciate the help.

    Hello Barney,

I had the same problem and was directed to the Java.com, installed the latest version, but I am still getting the same popup at startup and several times during my usual activity on my Macbook pro.  Any thoughts?

The download at Java.com will not solve the problem as it is a web plugin, not a JDK0--it has no command line interface. See the link in my post for the version that will likely help.

The program that causes the dialog box to show up was written poorly with respect to Java.

It is hard coded to only look for Apple's implementation of Java, so that is all it will ever be able to use.

Apple has stopped support for Java and will not provide any updates to its last implementation of Java, version 6.

It therefore recommends that you install Oracle's Java implementations. However, as I mentioned, the software that wants to use Java was poorly written and won't make any attempt to use Oracle's Java.

Some of that may be tied to the fact that they are using a 32-bit java. In that case, Apple's Java 6 is the only thing it can run as all of Oracle's Java versions are 64-bit.
