Oct 4, 2016 7:03 AM in response to Willie9100by becky_s22,Greetings Willie9100,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I see that since updating your iPhone last night to 10.0.2, your battery is draining really fast. You didn't have this issue before updating. I can imagine wanting to prevent your battery from draining. I'm happy to assist you with this.
Please have a look at Maximizing Battery Life and Lifespan and view the battery usage information and see what the proportion of your battery used by each app, specifically, this section:View Battery Usage information
iOS 9 is designed to be the most battery-efficient iOS ever. And it gives you more precise ways to manage your device’s battery life, because you can see the proportion of your battery used by each app (unless the device is charging). To view your usage, go to Settings > Battery.
Here are the messages you may see listed below the apps you’ve been using:
Background Activity. This indicates that the battery was used by the app while it was in the background — that is, while you were using another app.
- To improve battery life, you can turn off the feature that allows apps to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and set the switch to Off.
- If the Mail app lists Background Activity, you can choose to fetch data manually or increase the fetch interval. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data.
Location and Background Location. This indicates that the app is using location services.
- You can optimize your battery life by turning off Location Services for the app. Turn off in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
- In Location Services, you can see each app listed with its permission setting. Apps that recently used location services have an indicator next to the on/off switch.
Home & Lock Screen. This indicates that the Home screen or Lock screen was displayed on your device. For example, the display was awakened by pressing the Home button or by a notification.
- If an app frequently wakes your display with notifications, you can turn off push notifications for the app in Settings > Notifications. Tap App and set Allow Notifications to Off.
No Cell Coverage and Low Signal. This indicates that either you are in a poor cell coverage area and your iOS device is searching for a better signal or that you’ve used your device in low-signal conditions, which has affected your battery life.
- You can optimize your battery life by turning on Airplane mode. Swipe up to open Control Center and tap the Airplane mode icon. Note that you cannot make or receive calls while in Airplane mode.
Let us know if this helps.

Oct 4, 2016 6:05 PM in response to becky_s22by Trevormblank,I too have the same problem. Using your tips I have found that the calendar is using 82% of the battery. With the screen lit the battery percentage drops more then a percent per minute. How can I stop this?

Oct 5, 2016 12:06 PM in response to Willie9100by schmidt911,Ditto...how can apple allow this situation to occur. They make an update where the battery is discharging 25% faster? Do they not test for this? What is the fix?

Oct 10, 2016 10:20 AM in response to Willie9100by davisbest,Yes I have this problem. Worst yet, it doesn't show any abnormal usage for apps. Meaning that I have 31 minutes of usage after a full charge on a couple of app and I'm at 80%. By the time the day is half over and I've used my phone for about 40 minutes total I'm at about 50%. Try and facetime, about 25 minutes, then dead. I've already tried all the setting changes (iphone 6). This happened with upgrades to 8 and 9 but with the WiFi. Apple stays very quiet about these problems then fixes them in release 3-4 of the ios.
I'm certainly not claiming any conspiracy, just that it you upgrade then it seems that there are always a bunch really terrible glitches that effect certain people. To be honest, a lot of people probably don't even notice that there's an issue.

Oct 17, 2016 7:45 PM in response to Willie9100by Imsikk,I'm having the identical problem. This is absolute BS. My battery lasted long and now I can charge it fully and not even get 5 hrs out of it. Its new so its not the battery. its Stupid 10.0.2.
Whats up APPLE??? Lets go with a fix

Oct 18, 2016 6:48 AM in response to Willie9100by schmidt911,Thank you Becky from Apple for the information. However, I have a few comments regarding this.
- I have a product with nice features that I want to use. But cannot since they contribute to draining the battery based on a software update. This is not a legitimate fix.
- What you suggested did not solve the battery drain problem. I went beyond your recommendations and tried a complete re-install/reboot of the phone. I backed up all my data and flushed the phone out. Re-installed everything and still battery draining problem remains.
I have an 5s iphone and at this point the phone is almost unusable in the way I need it.
So what is apple doing about this? And, what can I do about it? I do not want to have to buy another phone and this problem started immediately after upgrading to 10.0.2.
Please advise.
Thank you

Oct 18, 2016 7:54 AM in response to Willie9100by mack5004,Same problem. Tried all the "fixes" listed above.
Battery at 80% - went to bed, woke up battery at 50%. Not ok. This update messed up a lot of other features as well.

Oct 18, 2016 12:57 PM in response to Willie9100by davisbest,UPDATE: So I read a few forums and found a solution. Reset your network settings. Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings. That seemed to work for me. ***** as you loose all your WiFi but oh well. Battery life seems to be back pre-ios 10. Cheers
