Q: macOS Sierra can't detect 2560 x 1440 monitor resolution correctly

I have just updated my MacBook Pro(Retina, Mid 2012) to macOS Sierra. I'm excited about the new features. However, I found that the resolution of my external BenQ GW2765 monitor is not detected correctly by macOS. BenQ GW2765 is a 2560 x 1440 capable monitor. I configured its resolution as 2560 x 1440 in EI Capitan but can't do it in macOS Sierra anymore. Does anyone have the same issue as I do? Is this a bug in macOS Sierra?

I also received a bug duplicate notice - Hopefully they are getting annoyed with us.

I can't believe that I lost 1440p as an option  - it doesn't make any sense. For the longest time Macs 27 in iMac was at this very resolution.

I hope individuals continue to post here and file bug reports and generally complain - they ought not to release new versions of anything that make you wish you could downgrade.

I also received a notification that my bug report is a duplicate. Hopefully there are many duplicates, which should make this issue a higher priority!

I had this problem moving from El Capitan to Sierra when using an HDMI-to-HDMI cable on an Asus PB278Q external monitor. The best resolution I could get was 1080p.

I read that using a Mini-DP-to-DP cable works. I bought this cable and am now back to 2560x1440.

If I swap to the HDMI-to-HDMI cable the best resolution I can get is 1080p.

Thanks for the tip, worth having that cable even if they'd fix it today.

Just for group knowledge - I have a 32inch 4K Monitor that was at 1440p prior to this update - now I can go full 4K or 1.5 reduction (which is either too big or too small, I found 1440p the right fit). I am using a thunderbolt cable, because HDMI doesn't push 4K at 60hz. HDMI might fix it for you, or it might not.

So I think this resolution change was across the board - they must've removed it with some reasoning, but I'm still not hot on losing an option after an upgrade.

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) running macOS Sierra '10.12 (16A323)'.  The primary laptop screen is running at scaled mode for 1680 x 1050 (HiDPI).

I can confirm that an external monitor (ASUS PB278Q) now has an option for 2560x1440 using a mini-displayPort to displayPort cable (without any converters).  This is the resolution used in the 'Default for display' mode and it is the top item in the 'Scaled' menu (without using the "option" keyboard modifier).  The default refresh rate is set at '59.88 Hertz (NTSC)' and grayed out; there was a lot of screen jitter at 60Hz with an HDMI-to-HDMI cable (and converters from HDMI to mini-displayPort).  Without trying to use SwitchResX, although it is installed, it now reports the external screen is running at '2560x1440 , 60 Hz - NTSC, 16:9' using the mini-displayPort to displayPort cable.  It is not running a 'HiDPI' mode.  The fonts are now good (not awesome).

I have a similar problem: When I first load my Mac with the monitor plugged in, the right resolution is selected and I have the standard Mac Displays resolution selector. But if I disconnect/reconnect the monitor then the Mac loses the 2560x1440 resolution and I experience the same problem as above.

@jdherman: Many many thanks for the cable tip. Just received it and I am back to 2560x1440 also. Best 9 bucks I have spent in a long while!

I have 2 of the GW2765 monitors as well and I have the exact same problem you are having. It boggles my mind how "updating" OSX results in lower resolution using exactly the same equipment.

    I'm using a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

    -2.6 GHz Intel Core i7

-NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB

    -Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
