Q: problems opening gmail attachments with OS 10.11.6

Following a software update to the latest OS X 10.11.6, attachments to gmail have refused to download.  I struggled with this until I stumbled across the fact that they open using Gmail.docs.  When they then download I may or may not be able to open and manipulate them.

What is going on?  Is this some change in gmail or a change in OS X 10.11.6?  As a side note I find this process to be very bothersome and even crude compared to simply downloading the attachment into the Download directory and using whatever application I need form those installed on my own computer.  My machine is a MacBook Pro, early 2011, with 8 meg of RAM.  The processor is 2.2 GHz with the Intel i7 Core.

Have you tried control - clicking/Download?

Based on your suggestion I tried Command/click on mouse pad and Command/Return.  I got an offer to save a document with a .html extension.  It would not save.  I need to download .doc or .pdf attachments.  The only way I can even open them is to use google.docs and while this sometimes works, it is WAY more cumbersome than simply downloading the attachment directly to the Download directory.

Is this a known issue with OS 10.11.6 or I am simply missing some setting somewhere in gmail or on my Mac?
