Hey, I was wondering if there is any way iMovie can take a screen shot of a commercial DVD (say the Lion King) and convert that frame into a photo that can be used as an icon or desktop? If so, how would I do that? I've tried the apple-shift-4 approach, but it won't let me take a screenshot when the DVD player is working. Any thoughts?

    Hi Lisa,
I don't have a commercial DVD to use, however I just tried it with my homemade DVD, and it worked.

I paused the DVD at the point I needed the photo, and did the Apple-shift-4, and it worked.

I also successfully imported into IPhoto, after I had saved it on my desktop (the resolution is small however (633 x474), but maybe because my powerbook is only 12", and I "grabbed" a small photo???

    Take care,
    Joan

    Hi Lisa,
My apologies...I was playing my dvd through IDVD (as an archive), and not through the real dvd player in my computer.
When I tried it with a commercial dvd through the player, it said that the action wasn't supported.

    I'm sorry.

Maybe you could just pause the screen, and take a digital photo of the screen, and use that! That would be a simple solution I suppose.
    Take care,
    Joan

I tried this with a home DVD, with it paused, and when I did the command it said "screen grabs are not supported during DVD playback."

    ???

    Hi Quint,
You are correct. I realized that too late, as I tried to explain in my second message.
    Take care,
    Joan

now, we make one step into illegality...

screen grabbing form commercial DVds is prohibeted with Apple-tools due to possible copyright conflicts...

this is a technical advice, no legal adivce, respect local laws:
get/use for free VLC, from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
    (that is legal)

play your DVD with THAT tool, use the usual Apple routines as -⇧-4 and drag that hair-cross about the section you need...

again: the use of such material is restricted! e.g. here in Germany, it is allowed for private use (on my Cube, as an example)
    Cube 450/1GB Ram/, Mac OS X (10.3.9), QT6pro/iLife5/k.schluter@mac.com
