Battery performance in 13" Macbook Pro with Touch Bar

Hello,

I just received my new 13" Macbook Pro with Touch Bar yesterday. Last night, starting with the battery 100% charged, I was using it to stream some video in bed -- it was disconnected from power at that point. The only applications running were Activity Monitor and the Chrome browser. The video used Flash (streaming Comcast live TV in the Chrome browser), and the video was running full screen. I didn't check the screen brightness, but the room was otherwise dark -- still, let's say it was running at 100% brightness. The keyboard backlight remained on, but dim. And the Touch Bar was not illuminated most of the time.

Much to my surprise, in about two hours, I got a low battery warning! The battery went from 100% to 9% in two hours?!

I am wondering if there is an issue with the battery in my Macbook Pro -- I am going to run some tests this morning, but I wanted to ask what sort of performance others are getting from their new Macbook Pro.

Thanks so much!

After one hour of streaming Netflix in Safari, we went from 48% to 20%, meaning that the battery would last about 3.5 hours.

This is extremely disappointing.

I will take the MacBook Pro by the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and have them confirm that there is nothing wrong with the battery in this unit.

That is normal for the new 13" Touch Bar.

Going from 75Wh to 49Wh battery, with little progress in CPU technology lately - there is no hiding the fact that the new model has poor real-life battery performance.

Maybe when the 10nm processor generation is released, this small battery will be viable.

Agreed - the battery performance in this new 13" MacBook Pro is unacceptable.

I am going to evaluate the 15" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. Initial impressions are that I love the size screen real estate but not the size of the laptop.

Otherwise, just stick with the 13" MacBook Pro from Late-2013 that I have been using.

Having the exact same problem here in the UK, don't event get 4 hours with just web browsing... Seriously annoyed! I want a replacement. Are other people seeing better battery life? Do we have faulty units?

My Full Charge Capacity (mAh) is showing as: 4365 mAh. What is everyone else's sitting at?

Since my last post I have ordered a replacement from apple.

Whilst waiting for the new one to arrive I have also been experiencing problems with my Time Machine backups failing. Whilst troubleshooting this with Apple over the phone, we discovered that my HDD is showing it's SMART Status as "Not Supported". This is obviously a fault. The support engineer susects that this is very likely the cause of the battery problems I'm experiecning as well. Might be worth checking if you are seeing a similar problem with your HDD (can be viewed in Disk Utility when focussing on the physical drive). I hope my replacement does not have this same issue!

I am really enjoying my new tMBP -- except for the lousy battery life.

Seems like this is a hardware design flaw, since I would assume a software fix would have already been made.

Is the only solution to make a Genius Bar appointment and have them tell me there's nothing wrong with the battery?

I believe the Apple technician you spoke to was misinformed regarding the SMART status of the SSD - every 2016 MBP shows "Not Supported" in Disk Utility. It's because the interface used for the SSD has changed to NVMe with the new models and there is no native support (yet?) in macOS for reading the status.

If you really want to know more about the SMART values of your SSD, you can try the latest smartmontools release that includes experimental support for NVMe. However, from my experience, when an SSD fails it's usually due to a firmware issue and happens totally out of the blue. Let's hope the new Apple SSDs don't have any such issues.
