2016 MacBook Pro Scare

I have had my maxed out MacBook Pro 15" for almost a week and today I got a bit of a scare. I was updating an app in the App Store when the video on my MacBook Pro went crazy. It ended up freezing the computer. I rebooted it and although it appeared to boot fine, the screen was flashing. I reset the PRAM a few times and booted into safe mode to no avail. I contacted Apple support and the end result was scheduling a trip to the Apple Store. I let the computer continue to run while I waited to leave for the appointment and it gradually cleared up (over about 30 minutes). I ended up canceling the Genius Bar appointment because I have too many other things to do right now but I know that the problem probably isn't really solved. I'm guessing a cold solder or something to that effect. Has anyone else seen problem with the video on the new 15" MacBook Pro going crazy and then flickering for quite a while? Spent too much on this thing for it not to be awesome.

Premiere has been my editing app for 3 years. In November 2016 I bought a 15" MacBook Pro with the Radeon Pro 460 graphics card. Almost immediately I started having crashes using Premiere. Apple had me do some resets by phone - Pram and something. 1t settled down for a short while, but then continued to crash, ending up crashing every time I played a clip. When the the computer crashed I got the green checker box freeze with red flashes. The computer was replaced by Apple at the end of December. Now the same crashes have started to happen on the new machine. I have contacted Apple and Adobe. Apple has made no suggestions. Adobe had me reinstall the app, but it is still crashing. The new computer has crashed 4 times during 5 hours of work. When I got the first machine in November I did a fresh install. I have little else installed on the machine other than the essential Creative Cloud app and no 3rd party apps or LUTs. I did migrate to the replacement machine. I am forced to return to my 3 year old MacBook Pro which works just fine. The new MBP will go back and it's unlikely I will buy another at this point.

I think I have the same problem. This video kind of indicates what it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktKtYzLso2A

They GPU glitches occur when I disconnect the laptop from the display and a hard restart is the only fix. This happens on MacBook Pro 13 with Touch Bar and MacBook Pro 13 without Touch Bar on LG 4K UHD Ultrafine display and two different models of the LG 4K UHD 27UD88-W display.

The macOS 10.12.2 update, VRAM reset, and SCM reset do not fix this issue.

I have had a similar problem. Bought the 15" MBP with Radeon 460 in November. My graphic related crashes started while using Adobe Premiere Pro, but I had graphics and kernel panics at other times, even while sleeping. Apple replaced the machine in December. The replacement has been stable outside of Premiere. The problem in Premiere centers around rendering in Open CL and Metal. It is a wide spread issue, there are over 200 posts in the Adobe Premiere forum from users experiencing crashes and graphic tearing and glitches. I decided to load OS v10.12.3 beta and now Premiere is stable using Open CL. I am relieved, but others are still having issues despite using 10.12.3. It gives me pause. The laptop is a very expensive. It has the "Pro" moniker, but many feel the name is hollow for pro users. Not enough testing is done by Apple or Adobe. Problems are not acknowledged or ignored and we are left to trouble shoot their lack of thoroughness. My older MBP is stable and I am considering returning this machine and going a different direction.

There are various reports about graphics card issues with the late-2016 model. It remains to be seen if it's simply a driver issue or faulty hardware. It's probably best to reschedule that GB appointment at a more convenient time (but not too far in the future!).

Hi. Yes I've had this issue and it appears to be a wider problem with the MBPro 15" models. My screen glitches and the machine crashes when using graphics intensive programmes such as Premier Pro. I have had my machine for two days and its not up to the job. Have spent hours on Apple support to try and resolve the issue but hasn't worked. I am now going to return it and get a refund. It's not up to the job. Apple support have also admitted that its a hardware issue too.
