Jittery scrolling on new 2017 9.7" iPad

I just purchased a 2017 9.7" iPad (128 GB) and noticed that there is occasional (and somewhat annoying) jitter when scrolling in Safari and Photos. This machine replaced an iPad Air which doesn't have this problem -- its scrolling is buttery smooth despite having a much older CPU/GPU. I appreciate that the A9 CPU performance should be about 1.8 times as fast as the chip in the Air, but I haven't seen any real-world benchmarks about the video performance. Is it really that bad?

For what it is worth, I played around with a number of similar iPads in the local Apple store and they all had the same jittery scrolling. The comparisons were done using Safari and looking at the same website -- both my old Air and a 9.7" Pro had much smoother scrolling.

Any ideas what is happening?

Thanks.

I noticed the same issue with the new iPad. Many webpages scroll badly as a good example take official Apple iPad website that jitters a lot, especially when scrolling up. No other iPad (Air 2, Pro, mini) have this issue so I decided to get a refund.

I'd just like to add that the video i posted wasn't made by me,but i can certainly see ths slight stutter/frame-skips in it.This is precisely the issue i had with two iPad 2017s.And as most games require timing,it's very off-putting.

It's very subtle, but it was there in every APP i tried. The effect was more pronounced depending on the APP.

I'd love to know what the problem was - My hunch (and it's just a hunch) is that it has something to do with Gamecentre. As the effect is very similar to the one you get when gamecentre is accessed within a game (when an achievement is unlocked etc). And i seem to remember a big problem with GameCentre in early version of IOS9 for some people.......Which took Apple almost 9 months to fix.Maybe another GameCentre bug has snuck in again & is only effecting a certain number of accounts?

Then again, people are reporting the problem in non-game APPS.....So i'm probably way off the mark.

I will add that the retailer wasn't very keen on giving me a refund, and they were adamant that they weren't going to give me another replacement. However, after showing them the problem in various games they agreed to give me a refund.

I hope you guys find some solution to this. The fact the problem improved whilst Apple viewed my iPad remotely still intrigues me.

Wait is it a typo error or you also asked the support remote view YOUR ipad and it temp fix as well?

My hunch would say if it's a problem with ios then it must have been an overlay issue. May I know where you bought yours and what model are you using?

Mine's ipad 32gb from apple/my online store

Yeah, whilst Apple viewed my iPad remotely the stuttering was far less frequent. It didn't stop the stuttering completely though. The person on the phone didn't seem to take my observation seriously, which i can fully understand.

The two iPad 2017s i had were both 128gb versions and one was gold and the replacement was space grey.

I purchased them from ARGOS (UK).

Oh wow really? I don't know if you noticed my comment before but It seems like we both had our ipad remotely viewed and it slows down the stuttering. I didn't fully noticed it whether it stops the stuttering or not but the usual lag in one place for my game didn't act up when the guy view it. So we might have something here. Maybe my theory of overlay issue is real. Thinking of buying another ipad cause I really need it but if ios 10.3 causes the problem and they won't acknowledge it then I can't proceed to buy an ipad then.

Have you recently gone back to your Apple Store to see if they have any new inventory of 2017, iPad 5s?

No one else is reporting this issue in the forums.

It's June, now!

It's the same less than two dozen users still complaining of this.

No one new is reporting this issue in the forums.

It has been over two months, now.

Go back to your Apple Store and check to see if this issue has gone away on the in-store iPad 5 units and if it has, see if you can get a replacement for your problematic iPad 5.

Good Luck to You!

Hi.

Sadly, this isn't an option for me as there are no APPLE stores anywhere near where i live. And i'm disabled, meaning i would have to rely on other people to get to even the closest store that sells them.

I did however try my cousins friend Ipad 2017 & it displayed the same problem,in the couple of games i tried,at least. He didn't seem too bothered by the problem himself,as he said he never played games anyway.

Hey guys a little update here (crucial one I think). So, a few weeks ago I refunded the replacement ipad 2017 that I bought from their official online store. So after receiving the money I instantly went to the listed Apple Reseller taken from their site which also has a Authorised Service Provider cert just to be safe. Went to a few stores for the ipad 2017 and my honest review was some lags/stutter more than others. So after a few days thinking, this time I just opt for the ipad Air 2 128gb (which has stopped production a while ago if I'm not mistaken) for about 80$ more than the 32gb Ipad 2017. So now after 2 weeks of using it I must say IM VERY SATISFIED WITH IT. Scrolling has never been smoother. Games doesn't lags at all in fast pace games (Although only on scrolling certain menu which I think only the game does that). Games do run at 60fps constant. Even if it's an old unit. I must recommend you guys to buy this instead if you really need it like I do. Extra note.. It's updated to the latest OS 10.3.2. No settings were different than the ipad 2017 I received a while ago. So maybe the ipad 2017 is not capable to run properly at all? I don't know. Just don't buy it period.

I managed to test another one yesterday,at some length. And this one had the same issue. Now,this had my uncles APPLE ID & he plays very few games. Not sure what is causing this. But that's now 4 devices i've seen with same issue.

He actually said he can't really see a problem & is keeping it.I suspect this is happening with a lot of cases.I'm not saying the problem is widespread,i'm just suggesting this could be a factor.

I think i'm going to save up for a Pro,in the hope that they drop in price when the new model comes out.

Sorry,i couldn't see a way to edit my previous post.

-------

I forgot to add i tried Geometry Wars 3 on his iPad 2017 & it seemed smooth as silk.Well, the stuttering wasn't as visable as it was on every other game itried. This is a fast moving game, with lots of sprites on screen, yet i could see no evidence of this stutter.

Sadly,i didn't test this game on mine,so i have no idea i mine was the same or not.Interestingly,Geometry Wars 3 doesn't use gamecentre for it's leaderboards,it uses facebook.

I wonder if all games that don't use gamecentre are stutter free?

Hi.

I tried that on the two i had,it made no difference.I even tried setting up a new APPLE ID,again it didn't solve it.Actually, looking back,i think i tried a few games on mine that had no gamecentre support and they still stuttered.

Maybe i'm being too fussy & it's not really a problem in most people's eyes? I don't know..........I just know it doesn't do it on my other two iPads.

Going to get a PRO at a later date anyway. This is a nice device, but for me at least,it's not worth the hassle.

Yeah I've tested that as well. New ID don't really make a different. I even use a different store(UK) ID to play the game.

So a new update to those who are following this thread. Remember I've said that the menu is still kinda lagging? Well I can say that it's no longer uses the word "kinda" lagging. It's for sure now. My other older ipad doesn't lag in the menu popups but both runs smoothly in the actual games (3D rendering/animations). The older Ipad was running on ios 8+ and my new Ipad is running on 10.3.2. Both Ipad Air 2. Older ipad are 16gb and new one is 128gb. Same settings in the game and in the ios. Since the menu was on the client based not constant internet connection needed, we can ruled out wifi connection in the findings. So maybe(theory) the new ios is too heavy with all the overlay and that makes the ipad 2017 couldn't run efficiently. So both software and hardware play a role in the stuttering for ipad 2017 since ipad air 2 has no problem running the games. Anyway the new ios 11 is coming out. For those who has ipad 2017 this might lowers the stuttering. But still not recommended to buy one

This is the only post on this issue and there is only 7 users in this post who are still reporting this issue.

It's nearly 3 months, now.

Why is no one else reporting this issue about the new 2017, 9.7 inch screen standard iPad?

Is this just so subtle that users simply are not seeing this, at all?

I'm am going back to my Apple Store to look at all the new iPad Pro models, so I'm will, once again, check out the 2017 iPad 5 models to see if this issue still exists.

I too noticed the lag on the ipad 2017. I was shopping for a new ipad and went to the Apple store last week. I played with the Pros first which was very smooth. I then went to the 2017 to compare and instantly I felt the lag when browsing Safari. I thought it only felt that way because I just played with the Pro so it felt slow in comparison. When i got home i used my ipad 3 (yes 5 year old ipad), and it was smooth, granted some sites it doesn't load smoothly but the ones it could it would scroll smoothy. I went back to the store two more times to compare and I can confirm every 2017 ipad in the store lagged on evey site.

I believe first time ipad users, kids and older adults may not see the lag. But I definitely notice it and it put me off buying one.
