    Hello Paul

The original serial number for your iMac is on the bottom of the stand.

Thanks Thorne. I realise that but I was concerned it may have warranty/theft implications - probably not really a major drama though.

    RE: the VRAM problem.
The technician at the New Farm Apple Centre wasn't at work on the day I had mine in for repair. One of his assistants did the repair instead and actually put the wrong logic board into my machine! They were very apologetic and professional. I should have my new board within a few days.

    Excellent service.

Hello everyone. Just to let you know I've had exactly the same problem. New iMac arrived 4 days ago and sure enough I experienced the flickering display. All the contributions have been very helpful.

I called Apple support here in Sweden. They were initially trying to fob me off with either buying the apple care package so they'd collect and fix my computer or I'd have to organise delivery to a repair centre. The cheek of it eh! That said it became a 'no brainer' and I asked for a replacement. Once transfered to After Sales it was painless. A new computer is on it's way, though because it's going take a while (being shipped from china in a week or two) I was given the option to fill in a form which will enable me to keep this computer until the new one arrives. I haven't received the form yet but if all goes to plan I'll be very satisfied with the way they've dealt with my problem.

In the mean time I've extended the time it takes before the display goes to sleep to 'Never' as I tend to shut the computer down when I'm finished and if I'm away from the computer the screen saver comes on after a few minutes to protect the screen. This setup should mean I won't suffer the flickering display anymore and will be fine until the new machine arrives.

    Hi,

I'm an iMac newbie (switchted from XP) and I just wanted to tell that I had exactly the same problem. I bought an iMac Dual core 20" and after a couple of days I also noticed the screen flickering after waking up from sleep mode.

After calling the support lines, doing tests (most of them useless in my opinion) the guy on the other side of the line declared my brand new iMac DOA.

A couple of days later an apple guy came at my home to seal my iMac. This person told me that this "flickering after sleep" issue, is was a known hardware problem (something to do with the PSU from the screen).

The good thing about all this is, that my reseller replaced my 20" core duo with a newer 20" core 2 duo with 1Gb memory, and gave me a 190 euros refund. So I'm kind of glad my initial imac broke down

    Best Regards.

Another one here having this issue.

It's been months now and I am starting to get very irritated by this issue.

I called Apple a few days ago for the flicker problem! It's very, very surprisingly, that nobody at Apple seems to have heard about the problem! Very strange...

Anyway, they told me, to bring my iMac to a local support-partner for checking and maybe repairing it. I brought it to the Service-Center today and they also never had heard about such a problem! What's the matter with this guys? Apple knows the problemm since a lot of people have complained the last few month, but they deny it!

And the Service-Center? Well, this guys are repairing and selling Macs for the whole Rhineland, an area with a few million people and a few thousand Macs out there... They also never heard about it??? I only have to visit an Mac-Forum on any site, to find hundreds of them...

    Can't believe it...

    verdun1916,
So, your authorized service "partner" denied your request for a repair? That's unconsionable! What're you supposed to do with a display you can't read?

No, they said, they will take a look, but the technican looked at me very weird, when I explained the problem. I think he thought, that I'm a Lamer and talking 'bout some minor issues, that could be solved by switching some settings in the preferences-menu...

    Hello

I bought my iMac directly from Apples german Webstore, I called the german AppleCare support in Cork (Ireland), described the flicker error and I received a new iMac, because he was only a few days old.
If the local german AASP doesn't confirm the flickering after Display sleep, show how it happens, 20-30 minutes of Display sleep and wake up from sleep is enough. If they dont replace the iMac, they have to replace the logic board.

Well, I also took my 20" iMac to a local service center here in Hamburg/Germany after calling the apple hotline. They changed the logoc board, the main board and the power supply, the flicker problem still remains, it just takes a few minutes more after activation of power safe mode until you see the effect. Now they want to change the display, but the replacement is still not in the service center. After that except the drives and housing are the only parts they did not change. Is this Apple quality? It's my first desktop Mac, and I really enjoy it, but this is extremely annoying!

I hoped that the latest EFI firmware update would, at last, fix this issue, but it didn't.

Any update on this big problem ? I'd like to figure out if it is hardware or software related... i.e. if it can be fixed or if i have to return the iMac.

It's a hardware issue (a replacement of the power management board or something similar), so unfortunately you'll have to bite the bullet and get it fixed

I can confirm this. Unfortunately the service people replaced nearly every part of my iMac (power supply, main board, logic board, display) but the error still remains, so now they want to replace a third type of board (forgot the name). I hope this will fix it, because I have the iMac since July, and I think after 4 months the time has come where a new computer should work as it is supposed to be. If not, want something from Apple, that makes the "pain" a little bit more moderate.

Wow, finally they managed to fix it. After taking my iMac FOUR TIMES to the nearest service center, it works! they again replaced the legic board, and this time it fixed the problem. Now powersafe mode of the display works, so replacing the logic board seems to be the way to fix it.
