Photos app on iPhone not syncing in iOS 11

I upgraded my iPhone7, iPad AIr and iPad Pro to iOS 11.

The iPad Air had stopped syncing Photos properly, reboots did not correct it, turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on did not work. I finally logged out of my iCloud account and back in, and it seems to be resolved on that device a few days back.

But now the iPhone 7 is doing the same thing. I repeated these steps of turning off ICloud Photo Library and Upload to My PhotoStream, rebooting and then turning them back on, and I did get the Photo to sync partially, but it stopped at 38,880 (photos and videos), whereas the Mac on Sierra, and the two iPads all show 57.755 (photos and videos).

I've made sure that I'm on wifi (I did have it set to allow cellular too).

With the Photos app open and the phone on the charger, I can see periodically that something is working briefly (the swirl next to the wifi signal) but the photos count is stagnant at 38,880.

I've also tried resetting the Network Settings.

I guess my next step is to log out of my iCloud account on the iPhone entirely, reboot and log in again.

Anyone else with this issue find another less painful fix?

An IOS 11 bug. IOS 11.0.1 isn’t synchronising pictures between Photos on an iMac (running MacOS 10.12.6) and IOS devices running IOS 11.0.1 (two in use - iPhone 6S and iPad Air2). iCloud photo sync is not in use, this is cable connection. iTunes is running on 12.7.0.

The devices receive some (but not all) of the “selected for sync” photo folders but all are without photos. No photos are moving to the IOS 11 devices. Existing photos on the devices - from pre-IOS 11 installation - remain in place, and photos do move in the other direction; exporting from IOS to iTunes/Photos.

A test sync using an IOS device running IOS 10.3.3 synchronises folders and photos without a problem.

If Apple needs another voice screaming that this is a problem it can have mine. New iPhone 8 synching with up-to-date iMac only adding empty folders and not even all folders I've checked to synch. iPhone then says 27.5GB of memory being used when I have 277 photos in camera roll. So I unchecked photo synching which apparently removed all previously synched photos - except that now I have 2000+ photos in a Live Photo folder??!! Possibly explains why the phone thinks it's using so much memory for photos. Have tried most solutions mentioned in this thread with no success. Spent weeks on this problem. C'mon Apple give us a fix.

I did that iCloud turn on and off thing. When it was on, it DID erase the EXTRA memory that was (as if) used by photos. Like i mentioned before, my memory allocation doubled as if I had twice the photos that I DIDNt have 🙂 however strange that sounds.

Then I went back, did the sync. it did sync folders and photos, but again not fully. some folders and photos didnt show up on the phone at all, almost 4,000 (thousand) photos out of 24,000 did not come back.
And needless to say, my memory is back at almost full, because the iClound on/off didnt get all my memory cleared.

This is extremely frustrating! Why would apple do this, out of nowhere, and just like people here mentioned its not a hard fix for them, since they make the device and the iOS!

Hey everyone,

Has there been any progress or advice \ support on this issues? I'm ROTTED I can't sync all my pics. I spent the extra money on the 128GB Ipad 2017 for the purpose of storing pics directly to the device. Apple took my money but they are not supplying the service I am paying for. 😡

it must be a bug and i don't know why Apple didn't resolve it sooner. The staff at Apple store didn't know how to resolve it neither. They asked me to restore to factory setting for the phone and restore the latest backup from my iTunes. The photo works again but after a few more syncs, the same problem arose again. What a frustration!

Since this problem is limited to the newer iPads on 11.x OS many of us no longer have skin in the game as there are work arounds. However, for those affected, this flaw can have major impact on a professional level. My iPad is mainly used as a portable image sharing device.

Someone up thread suggests engaging the technical media, who would relish a story such as this. A serious flaw in the number one device provider ecosystem, impacting professional and casual users.

Apple doesn’t understand how important this is. They have no legal risk as our acceptance of OS updates indemnify Apple from consequences.

The only way to pinch Apple is through the marketplace.

I have just had a call from my Apple advisor saying that he has tried to sync a large quantity of photos to his iPad and he is also having the same trouble as we are all having. He contacted Apple Engineers offering them logs from his Mac and their response to him was that they didn't need his information as they have enough information from other sources to identify the problem which according to them is with iTunes and not the iOS and they are working on a fix. Hopefully that won’t be far away…… What a wonderful Christmas present that would be.

We seem like a family, everyone here within this discussion so I just want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and may you all have a safe and prosperous New Year

That is exactly what my advisor said to me. They took plenty of log files from me and we spent hours on the phone. The last time he called they told me the developers now have everything they need and will be working on the problem. He didn't tell me it was a problem with iTunes though. But I don't really care if it is iTunes or IOS 11. All I care about is them fixing it.

Personally I don’t buy the iTunes angle myself as I’ve had iOS 10.3.3 sync just fine and turn right around using the same iTunes version with ios 11 and bomb. I still have an iPad on 10.3.3 which syncs fine on the present iTunes version.

Maybe it is iTunes, but I find it strange that I can sync my iphones in full in one try but not the iPads on iOS 11. In either case, they need to fix this whatever it is and soon.

audiomixer,

Exactly, I don't buy it either for the reasons you state. But, when they removed iOS app management from iTunes, it's entirely possible they may have introduced an unintended collateral interaction between the two software sets. If they can fix it with a change to iTunes, the sooner the better. Just get it done Apple!

There is a solution. I have had this problem over the past several IOS versions, going back to 10.0. I do not use iCloud photo library, but sync my photos from a 'Pictures' folder on my Mac's hard drive. I have my photos all separated in discreet folders for all the separate events in them. I do not use the Photos app.

HERE'S WHAT YOU DO:

After synchronizing your iPhone or iPad, and verifying that the pictures all exist in the 'Photos' view on the bottom left of the iPhone, disconnect and add one folder with a picture in it on your MAC.

Then, plug the iPhone back in, re-sync and voila, you will see all the photos in the proper 'Albums'.

You might have to do this a couple of times, but eventually it will work.

That will not work on my iPad. The problem is getting all the pics on the device to begin with. It took approx 20 syncs on each of My ipads running a variant of iOS 11 to even get all the pics loaded from a fresh reset iPad. Once the pics were loaded, so were my albums.

I use Windows 10, and the USB method to sync. I have many albums (i.e. folders) and about 6000 pics in total. Doesn't matter how numerous or how few new photos I need to sync (sometimes as few as 10, as many as 70), it takes anywhere from 5 to 8 sync to get them all over.

I am on a PC using iTunes version 12.7.2 and an iPad Pro running 11.2.1, connected with a USB/Lighting cable, and I cannot get pictures to sync from the PC to the iPad.

iTunes show that there is nothing in progress and there was no error message. The iPad says "452 Photos, Syching.." and still don't have the last 452 photos.

Bookem4096, most everyone has the same issue. Mine is exactly like yours, save for me having an ipad 5th Gen/2017.

A couple guys here said Apple acknowledged they are aware of the issue and the high volume of complaints. Apparently the problem is within itunes.

With the frequency of itunes updates you would think it can be fixed fairly quickly. Let’s hope so. The money we all invest in Apple products is too high not to have it fixed quickly.
