No, sadly that didn't work for me. Any time I pull the headphones out, it switches to "Digital Out" and there are no other options available.

It's frustrating that I can't recommend Apple stuff to my friends anymore with the argument that "it just works."

    Hi,
I just joined. I experience the same internal speaker problem and nothing seems
to help. Sometimes various solutions(mute/unmute, itunes stop/pause etc.) seem to help but only temporally. Does a clean install of the OSX helps??
I have spent over 2.300e for my MBP and i dont have sound from my internal
    speakers!!!!!

It is not software issue. Plugin the headphones and unplug the headphones (there was also mention of a toothpick) until you flip shut what ever it is that is keeping the optical beam on (the red light coming out). This worked for me (although I don't know how long it will continue to work).

Like so many companies out there it seems like Apple's quality might be slipping a bit.

This cannot be related to the 10.4.8 update.. I have applied this update without any (further) problems.

    Hi,
I'm from Argentina. I have the same headphone jack problem. Apparently it's because of a motherboard issue. I'm getting mine replaced this week and will let you know if it's been solved.

    Hi all!

I write this most enthusiastically ... the toothpick did the trick. I stuck it in gently ... pointing the sharp tip end at about 6 o'clock ... and you will hear a very mechanical "click". The red light went off, and System Prefs reflected this immediately.

I can vouch this is NOT a software problem. It's all about a catch getting stuck.

Crappy Jack: stars and salutes to you. You just saved me a 3 hour journey to the closest service shop, and days of lost productivity.

This discussion group is far more helpful than Apple techs ever are.

    Awesome! =)

    Hi James,

I would like to try your idea of repairing the permissions.
As I am completely new with Apple Mac, I don't know how to do that.

Could you please give details on that?

My current situation is that I re-installed OSX as well as all the software I use (Skype, Office, etc as well as all the latest updates).

Hi. I have the same problem. I think it is a software problem because yesterday my speakers turned on for 5 minutes and than turned off again without touching in the hardware. I do not know why Apple isn't worried about that.
It appeared after dowloading the new software from Apple a month ago. Someone with more ideas????

I had to plug in some headphones and pull out about 10 times before the trick worked.. good news, it does work.
