I got a 6600 with my G5 2.3 in July. At the time it was deemed "appropriate" for the uses I wanted but in the last few months it has become "barely adequate". I can justify the expense of the new ATI card if I can fit the 6600 to the AGP slot in my G4 Sawtooth but I gather the architecture may be different and it is not backwards compatible. Has anyone tried this and can tell me definitively if it is a no-no?

G5 dual 2.3, Mac OS X (10.4.8), 30" display, Epson 7500 + 3000

    Hi,
Welcome to the Apple discussion Forums!

Your G5 is a PCI-e machine, which means the slot is different for the 6600 card. A PCI-e video card will not fit a G4 AGP slot.

Many thanks for replying. I suspected it may be unworkable for reasons such as this. Forgive me if I am being dense but... in the G4, can you use other than the AGP slot? Are the other slots not PCI? I know this may come across as being a foolish question but it is such a long time since I gave thought to such matters. Thanks.

The other slots are PCI, not the PCI-Express needed for the G5 graphics card.

Actually I take this back. I am not happy that the AppleStore info told me this card was OK and within a couple of weeks I am told in the AppleStore that it is not up to the job. Clearly in use it isn't, when using Aperture, which has crashed a few times after drawing black triangles instead of photo images. I am distressed to note that in the US there is a great post sales support area with full details on price and upgrade protection where you can raise such concerns. Whereas in the UK you get nothing like that. This is not the same as finding out a better version comes out shortly after a purchase, which always prompts the "tough luck chum" responses, so I have written to Apple istead.
