The replacement arrived today, with 1.1 firmware on it. Whining was approximately the same as on my first ipod (maybe 20% quieter, maybe the same). Upgraded to 1.1.1 via iTunes - it did not affect the sound. Clickwheel is a little bit loose this time, but that does not annoy me.

As before, I will try using the nano in a quiet room at night to make the decision whether to keep it or ask for refunding. Not going to play that game "return - wait 3 weeks - face uncertainty" anymore. Come on, Apple. Tell us something already.

Ok, after careful listening I see now that this replacement nano is indeed quieter. With the old one, I could hear the whining while holding at arm's length. Now that sound only becomes audible within 10-15 cm from the ear, and only when the back side of the iPod is turned towards me.

In practical situations, I only hear it occasionally when I hold the iPod in my hand and lift that hand to the ear to adjust an earphone.

Taking it all into account, I decided to keep this nano.

As for listening with connected speakers at low volume in a very quiet room (situation described by one of the posters), there is a way to make sure the sound is eliminated 100%. Choose the speakers that charge iPod - you will probably have the same whining level (virtually zero) as when connected to the computer via USB.

I've hd my 2gig silver nano for a week now, and I can detect a whine only at a distance of about 10cm (2.5") even when the screen is dark and/or it's charging. But it's not an issue for me that there's a barely detectable whine. Somehow this all reminds me of that article I read a couple months back about high-school kids using high frequency ring tones in classrooms, not alerting their teachers, most of whom (perhaps like myself) have less of an ability to hear the higher notes.

i had mine installed with 1.0.2 and i updated it to 1.1.1 and buzzing can now only be heard if you put up close to your ear. i wonder if 1.1.1 has fixed the prblem for some of us?

Apple will most probably say that there is nothing wrong with it. Other people have sent them to Apple and Apple have said they nothing about this issue. Loads of people have said that they have called Apple about the issue!

    yarry,

Hearing it about 10-15cm away is normal. They buzz qietly as the LCD screen is on. I read it on the web somewhere. As the LCD's are so thin.

    Hi there!
I feel I must share my experiences with You. I've bought a 4GB green nano a few days ago and it worked excellent, no whines or buzzes. Today something strange happened. While I was listening to the music I heard whining, coming out of my brand new iPod. I thought it must have been the issue we're all talking about - and I was right. The buzz is not so loud but it drives me crazy! Firmware upgrade didn't solve my problem. The whines started when I upgraded to 1.1.1! And what's strange, when I have my iPod connected to my computer, there is no buzz at all! Do any of you guys know whether Apple is willing to replace my iPod? I live in Poland and I'm sure they didn't hear anything about this problem.

I don't know about Poland actually. But Apple must have some returns or replacement policy for you. I doubt that Apple will help you much they will probably send you back a brand new iPod and there still is a chance that it will come back. Firmware from Apple is wierd, it doesn't seem to fix all things correctly, however 1.1.1 did fix my nano's buzz. I had it with 1.0.2 so perhaps if you update it direct its ok?????

    Well, guys.

Two hours and a half ago I've received the FOURTH nano and... IT DOES THE WHINE!!!

Besides, it seems to be barely audible. Anyway, whine or not, I'll keep this one, I won't change it for the fifth time.

Apple wants me to keep this buzzing piece of aluminum and I'll satisfy Apple's desire.

I better get some rest, I'm tired, very tired, almost exausted...

Ah! I got an Incase sleeve as well, just to be sure to not ear any buzz.

    Hi,
I've got a second generation Nano 2 Gb with version 1.0.2. It also whines but I can only really hear it when it's up near to my ear. My girlfriend, though, can hear from several metres away and finds it just a little irritating.

We tried a few little tests, with her several metres away and looking the other way, and she correctly identified every time I (quietly) turned the Nano on and off, so you can see that for some people it's quite a loudish noise.

I read below that some people noticed a difference when they updated their Nano with the latest (Dec 2006) update for the Nano. After installing this new update, I can report that the high pitched whine that my girlfriend could hear is gone. When I hold the Nano to my ear, I can still hear a slightly lower pitch whine, but it's so quiet now as to be non-existent. Even my gf with the sensitive ears can only hear it when it's up against her ear.

    The bottom line?
If your Nano is whining, try first getting the latest update from Apple and see if that helps.

A couple weeks(early Dec) ago I bought a new 8gig black Nano with the old firmware from Walmart. I am lucky to announce that mine has absolutely no buzzing or whining noise.
