Hello, I believe I have a varient of this problem, a vertical red line has appeared one pixel wide in the middle of my screen and it won't go away. How does one contact the correct people at Apple to fix this? I have their extended care coverage, but have been unable to find anyone who knows about this.....pws29926

Hi, just joined the club... :-O :-((

    Model: 17" (iSight)
Date purchased: Jan 7th, 2006 (w/o extra warranty)
    Serial No: W8545xxxxxx
Description: two vertical lines / yellow line 7mm from right side / blue line 13mm from right side

I suspect this problem will become more prevalent with imac g5 users.

If anyone at Apple is reading this...

    PWS,

If you have AppleCare simply take the computer to your nearest Authorised Apple repair centre or contact AppleCare on the phone.

    Cheers

It must actually be a fairly rare problem, from what I can see, mimbrate. I've seen very few reports of it here, despite accessing these boards almost daily. It hasn't come up as a significant issue on other Mac related boards either much, as far as I am aware. A "general" problem would be attracting far more posts than we see here on the matter. Don't forget this is basically the Mac "hospital".

Apple staff cast an eye over the boards, but it is essentially a "self help" service.

    Cheers

    Hi Rod,

I would have been inclined to agree with you that this 'vertical-line-on-the-LCD-display' occurrence "must actually be a fairly rare problem", if indeed there have been "very few reports".

To convince myself, I did a little 'All Categories' search of the forums before I posted my own report, but ended up feeling a tad disappointed that my experience isn't exactly an isolated one -most notably with users of PowerBook G4 17" models (but then again, mine's only an iMac G5 17"). I was somewhat surprised to note that most of the users -in All Categories- who had reported their problem, observed the vertical lines appearing within 12-15 months of purchase.

Well, perhaps I'm making too much of a fuss based these "very few reports". What I wasn't surprised about, however, was that most of those who had posted, did not purchase the APP. Now, darn it - if only I had bought the APP, I'd be happily on my way to the Apple Service Centre and not moaning about it over here...

based on the threads i have seen on the pb 17" issue on this site, as well as other sites i googled, it seems like the common denominator is that most of the units were manufactured in shanghai (factory w8) in 2005, and most had serial numbers beginning w85...

followed their links, which led to a site that tracks the manufacturing details of each mac (http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html) and found out that my imac had the same things in common with the problematic pb 17" units.

also read in the blog that apple seems to be censoring the issue by deleting the threads they have in their discussion forums. have you guys heard anything about this?

    Me too; Serial W8543... etc., etc. As I recall it started about 6 months ago with something that was intermittent; faint and gone when up to temp, but by the time I was looking;
a - here for answers and
b - for the corrected paperwork (first one's power supply was declared DOA after one week home and three in the shop in January '06, so of course out of warranty)
we had a thin green line top to bottom through the flag (usually) then for couple of weeks now it has been joined by a bright red through the airport symbol and in the last few days I've noticed two more greens; one beside the time and one through bluetooth, but also sometimes ie. while screen is waking, colours vary and 'echoes' are visible as well these present fixture 'artifacts'
We are north of Cairns so coping with power outages, humidity, and other factors makes us prone to low expectations of low-end products.
This purchase was to replace a G3 (power supply) which replaced the LC (rusted motherboard) we brought up here with us in November '95, so - while I appreciate the upgrades - I would like to see Apple's examination of this phenomenon and look forward to a response with our allegiance in mind.

    Same problem!
iMac G5 (iSight) 17 inches monitor.

The first blue line appears in december 2006 (just after the warranty expired)
By now I have 8 vertical lines in the middle right of the monitor, colors cyan, dark blue, yellow and magenta.

The apple guys says that they are not going to replace any part for free, because my expired time warranty, and fixing it, would cost me almost the same money of a new iMac.

    What to do?

Mimbrate, I am having exactly the problem you speak of and it is very frustrating to see we are not alone.

Vertical blue / purple line G5 17". Purchased 13 months ago. The 'very few reports' Rod speaks of seem to be becoming fairly frequent.

Surely this is something Apple should be addressing. I paid AUD$2000 for this machine 13 months ago and now there is a line running down the middle of the display and to have it fixed requires an enormous amount of money.

    APPLE. WHERE ARE YOU?
