I have: QuickTime™ Version 7.1.5, Player Version 7.1.5 and Flip4Mac (windows media components 2.1.0.33) and cant successfully play local wmv files in Quicktime Player. If emailed, they play fine from within Mail (just as well as a quicktime movie). They also play without a hitch in the little preview you get when a folder is in column view.
But, when I open them from the finder (or the open command in Quicktime Player) the movie opens up, the first frame displays, but when the movie plays you can hear the audio fine but all you see is the first frame. Oddly, if you stop the movie half way thru, in a minute (or two), the current frame will suddenly update, but if you hit play again the movie just stays on that frame.
I have hundreds of wmv files (mostly jokes I have been sent) and I want to move away from Microsofts player which is no longer supported.
Any tips to get them playing using QT player/F4M? I have deleted QT Players plist file but this did nothing.

I am wondering if the 800 imac hasn't the oomph to play them back full size since QT is playing them back in the preview window.

Even on a dual 2.5 Ghz G5 my WMV files take a second to get going. Try opening in MPEG Streamclip and transcode them to MP4 which can take a while but do a few overnight and you can transcode them all.

You can test one by setting in and out points 15-20 seconds apart then export to MPEG-4 and see if the MP4 is playable.

Thanks for the headsup on MPEG Streamclip....Although the exported mp4 (and I also tried .mov's) wouldnt play in QT Player, the wmv original movies (and the conversions) played without a hitch...at full size... in MPEG Streamclip itself. Only leads me to the conclusion that there is something wrong with QT Player on my mac.
I'll be upgrading to Tiger soon, so hopefully the problem will just "go away"

I have a suspicion abut this. I too have F4M (2.1.0.33), but it won't open a recent .wmv file via QT.

If I try it in VLC, I get the following comment:

    "
main debug: looking for decoder module: 24 candidates
main error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WVP2'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
main debug: killing decoder fourcc `WVP2', 0 PES in FIFO
    "

I suspect that Microsoft keep tweaking their wmv format to keep 3rd-party companies on the back foot, and Flip4Mac is one of these.

I dare say that they haven't caught up - or been allowed to catch up - yet.

Answer? Well, I suppose we could all try emailing F4M and ask them what is going on.

Note that VLC and MPEGStreamclip both play the sound track even though the video codec bails out.
