i hope you have better luck than i have had with the update. this isn't the first time that i've had kernel panic issues. they all seem to occur while the computer is trying to wake from sleep. one of the apple retail stores suggested that it was probably an airport. here's my most recent entry from panic.log

FIXED at least on my machine and workplace. I'll try it at home also. If I get a new KP related to the Airport I'll let you know. If not, it means it's definitly fixed!

Ran the machine all weekend on the wireless and not a single KP.

My machine also doesn't kernel panic anymore after the last airport software update.
I wonder why there is still no official comment from Apple on this issue.
It seems as though the last airport update fixed the problem so it seems clear to me Apple has been working on it lately.
Any offical notice would be appreciated.

I bought a MacBook Pro 17 inch 2,16 GHZ 2GB RAM in May here in Germany. Since then I had to fight with Kernel Panic for instance like this (different crash logs possible):

Before i had a Powerbook G4 17 inch 1GHZ 1 GB RAM and never had any problems with it (even did not know that kernel panic exists).

I formatted the HD and installed the system for several times. I tried to fix some software problems after loooking at the “Konsole” with my migrated data.

The MacBook Pro had been to the local dealer where I bought it in Hamburg three times. They changed: 1. Processor, 2. Logicboard (is there a difference?) 3. Body (just to give me the chance to change the complete MacBook for a new one)

When I was on a “holiday trip” I started from an external LaCie HD and it crashed totally. I could not start from the intern HD again. I went to a local Mac-Dealer, who checked the RAM (no problem), then left me with the info: Apple Service.

So I went back home, the local MacDealer saved my data from HD and the 2nd and 3rd repair as mentioned above followed.

    Kernel Panic did not stop.

For 1 day now it worked fine, before it crashed approximately twice a day. I am working on a keynote presentation which I will show In October to an audience of 1000 people. I really have panic that there will be kernel panic again and I loose this job forever.

This morning it crashed with kernel panic three times, although I did not do much (Entourage, Safari) and it was not getting hot.

I do not use Airport but have installed the recent Airport update !

I read some messages that Apple will bring out a revision of either MacBook Pro 17 or logicboard for it, so I am waiting still to change it.

Does somebody have the same problems or knows something about new logicboard or MacBook Pro 17?

    Thanks

Bernd

I too had the dreaded kernel panics from day one. Apple took it back and repaired by putting a new logic board in it (15" mac book pro). So far no problems while using wireless connection.

    My KP story:
    - Bought 1.83GHz MBP
    - Frequent kernel panics ("Type 14=page fault" approx every hour)
    - All the usual Apple-published fault finding did not help
    - Apple Service Centre here in New Zealand replaced RAM, then Main Logic Board
    - Did not cure problem
    - Apple Service Centre replaced MBP with a new 2GHz model
    - Replacement MBP suffered frequent kernel panics ("Type 14=page fault" and "mbuf address out of range" approx every 2 hours)
    - Apple Service Centre replaced RAM - did not cure fault
    - Apple Service Centre replaced Airport Card - did not cure fault
    - Apple Service Centre replaced Main Logic Board
    - So far, so good. No kernel panics after around 12 hours use.

The replacement Main Logic Board is a "version 2" according to the Apple Service Centre. They have never received any info from Apple on the problem, but have seen it occur on several MBPs. Their take on the problem is that the earlier Main Logic Boards suffered from a noisy power supply line. They say that the "Version 2" Main Logic Boards appear to have a component change in a power supply line. This new board also appears to be less affected by the whining CPU.

Last update. Windows Vista RC1 didn't like BootCamp dual boot solution and decided to take over my MAC, so I did a full disk format and a MAC OS X clean install.

I was surprised to see my MBP was working perfectly on my wireless network.

Downloaded about 1Gb (the 300Mb auto-update to 10.4.8 x3) without doing any updating and no problems. So maybe there is actually some firmware update in that package that I previously downloaded, that kept it working even after a disk format.

By the way and off topic, everything worked in Windows Vista RC1 5600, except for the keyboard mapping, lighting and shortcuts. I'm certain that a bit more than 2 hours running it would have lead me to some solution (I think there is actualy an apple keyboard driver!), but I just wanted to find out if it was possible, after seing reports of MAC running WinMC.

After installing the latest AirPort update on Sept. 23, I have been using AirPort extensively and have had no kernel panics. It is now Oct. 06. The new patch seems to be doing the job.

I do not get the KPs booting in SAFE mode but I cvannot see Airport hardware then either
I get KPS evrey time for 2 weeks on new machine but I am deep into new job editing video and cannot stop and the KPs dont actually impede editing.

    Have done Archive and Install
    Have upgraded to 10.4.8

    Update

I found an advice page suggesting using PAcifist to reinstall parts of the OS
Notably the parts reported in the Crash Log

I did that and restarted (with KP at shutdown) and lo and behold the Airport Extreme card was visible again.
I turned it off so as not to tempt fate and restarted and yay no KP on shutdown.
1st time since I bought it. Other than in SAFE mode.

But on restart Airport Hardware disappeared again and KP again on Shutdown.

Im thinking it must be a fault with the Airport Card to corrupt the drivers etc like that. Am i on the right track? and if so there would be nothing I can do untill I finish the job in 3 months and can get it back to the shop

    regards

PS I know this in MAcbook but i cant find other people talking about KPs and Airport

I have been having this problem non-stop since I got my MBP 15" 2.33 on Jan 29, 2007. The machine was built in week 3 of 2007.

I have also had a problem with restarting when the lid is closed. Also numerous program crashes. And problems waking from sleep.

Under direction from numerous level two product specialists: Tried archive and install, total disk erase and install, swapping RAM in and out, 24 hour extended hardware tests... nothing.

Apple replaced the logic board and "top deck" and thermal spacer module... did not fix the problem.

Apple replaced the airport card.... did not fix the problem.

Finally after 3 months of constant phone calls to apple, constant reinstalling of software, and the computer being in the apple shop twice for almost 30 days in 30 months, they are replacing the machine.
