May 4, 2007 3:09 PM in response to David Lawrence4by David Lawrence4,so I finally found the manual for the Radeon 7000
it says "Power: +5V 5± %, @ 1.3A typical"........and under Bus it says "PCI: 32-bit PCI local bus compliant with PCI version 2.1 specification 33 or 66MHZ compatible"
now in the Power Mac G5 Technical Specifications i found online at apple it says
"PCI expansion
One of the following configurations:
Three open full-length 64-bit, 33MHz PCI slots, or
One open full-length 64-bit, 133MHz PCI-X slot and two open full-length 64-bit 100MHz PCI-X slots"
I have the FIRST of the Dual 2.0 GHz G5's.....the later Dual processor G5's might have had different specs than mine, but this Technical Specs file online doesn't specify between different generations of the dual 2 GHz G5's
but does this info help anyone assist me?
I do have 2 completely random cheapo firewire PCI cards in my G5 that I threw in there without much thought and they work fine....but I have no idea what their speeds/voltages are
I saw somewhere that G5's might ONLY be able to take 3.3 volt cards....so does that mean using the Radeon 7000 is a BAD idea for me since it says 5 Volts above??
or were the original Dual 2 GHz G5's okay with 5 volt pci cards?

May 4, 2007 4:16 PM in response to David Lawrence4by Forrest McElfresh1,PCI 2.1 compliant cards will work in PCI-x slots. PCI 2.1 specified signaling at either 5.0 or 3.3 VDC. PCI-x still makes available +5 and +12 VDC for power.
If you are purcasing a card the R9200 PCI is superior to the R7000 PCI. -
May 4, 2007 5:44 PM in response to Forrest McElfresh1by David Lawrence4,i guess then you are saying YES, that the Radeon 7000 will work fine in my G5.....no, I am not purchasing....I happen to already own the Radeon 7000
thank you, I hope you are right! -
May 14, 2007 8:02 PM in response to David Lawrence4by David Lawrence4,I opened my G5 just to insert the Radeon 7000 to see if it would even fit. It fits with absolutely no problem into slot 3. It would fit into slots 2 and 4 easily as well....those are both filled with an adaptec AFW-4300A 3-port FW PCI cardand some old 5-port firewire macally PCI card. those 2 cards are both old regular old PCI cards too, nothing special for the G5......
So now I am scared to turn it on, though, because of the whole 3.3 vs 5 volts thing.....could I blow anything up, hurt the computer? I would wish that if there was a problem, that simply the PCI card would not function but wouldn't hurt anything.
BUT I'M SCARED TO TRY!!!
help me, anyone know whether FOR SURE the original dual 2 GHZ Powermac G5 from early May 2004 (not June) with these PCI specs:
"Three open full-length PCI-X slots: one 133MHz, 64-bit slot and two 100MHz, 64-bit slots"
would be able to accept a Radeon 7000 when two obviously old PCI cards work fine alread??
aahhhhhhhhhhh -
May 14, 2007 11:22 PM in response to David Lawrence4by David Lawrence4,I took the dive, it works just beautifully
only problem now is I use Pro Tools, which doesn't support PCI graphics and is giving me some error messages!
****....oh well, glad I know it works now!
