I just got my PM G5 Dual 2.0 GhZ (4 RAM Slots) back from an Apple Authorized Dealer. I had 1 GB of RAM in there and they added two more 1 GB chips and said that it was working. However, the "About This Mac" thing shows me 1 GB when there should be 3 GB! What's the deal!?

Dual 2 Ghz PowerMac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

DIMM's may have become unseated in transport.( with power off ) Gently push them into their sockets and make certain the clips are engaged then power up and see if they show.

Is it necessary that I am grounded? Or is it safe for me to take them right out and put them right back in?

Reset NVRAM - the 'device tree' doesn't always get updated properly if you just install the RAM. It will show up if or when you have enough programs that they access the added memory.

Easy way is to boot into Open firmware
    command + option + o + f (all four on startup)

    then type:

    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all

Restarts on its own. you'll need to use OPTION key and reselect startup disk control panel.

If you still have it not show, then go in and tinker.

I don't really know what I just did, but I followed your instructions and it didn't seem to work. I still only see 1 GB. I'm going to open it up now, and I will get back to you. It would be great, for educational purposes, if you would explain what exactly the Open Firmware is and what I just did to my mac! Thanks!

    You reset nvram.

Try searching and you will find Apple support documents, forum threads.

Open Firmware is your Mac's "BIOS."

Almost like doing "zap the PRAM/NVRAM" only easier.

The fact it didn't show up or change isn't nice. You should ask how they know they upgraded it. I would hope they didn't "forget to do it." or something.

I just checked out all of the chips and noticed something interesting. The chips (2 x 512 MB) that came with my mac are rated at 400 MhZ and the chips (2 x 1 GB) that were just installed by the Authorized Apple People were rated at 333MhZ. If I'm not wrong, you can't mix speeds... is that right?

The 333MHz chips are PC-2700 what you need are PC-3200. PC 2700 are meant for SP 1.6 G5's all others 1.8 or over require PC-3200

Thank you very much, I am taking it in again tomorrow to get new chips.

Took the RAM back to dealer, turns out it was the wrong kind.
