Jun 7, 2007 9:56 AM in response to JohnMayby eww,Hi, John, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your Intel Mac can't run in Classic mode, so the discs that came with it don't include an OS 9 installer. There are some OS 9 applications that will run in a third-party emulator called Sheepshaver on Intel Macs, but you were misinformed if someone told you it was possible to run a Mac Pro in Classic mode. You will need to buy a copy of OS 9.0.4 (no later version) to use Sheepshaver. -

Jun 17, 2007 3:36 PM in response to JohnMayby Charles Dyer,I want my Mac Pro to run Mac OS 9 Applications.
Can't be done with a Mac Pro unless you go with 3rd-party hacks such as Sheepshaver. <http://sheepshaver.cebix.net/> Note that Sheepshaver has problems with some versions of the Mac OS, and that some applications have problems with Sheepshaver. What apps do you need to run in OS 9?
in System preferences/ Startup disk, I have only Mac
OS X available.
I am told I need to install Mac OS 9 From my disks i
got when I purchased the machine.
That used to be the case, with PPC Macs. It is no longer the case with Intel Macs because Classic doesn't run on Intel Macs and Apple therefore didn't bother shipping OS 9. Even if you get Sheepshaver you'll need to get a copy of some version of the Mac OS between 7.5 and 9.0.4 from somewhere.
I have scanned these disks and can not find Mac OS 9
anywhere.
Please help I would like my machine to run in classic
mode as well.
Thanks.

Jun 18, 2007 12:25 PM in response to ewwby Charles Dyer,I didn't see your post.
I also didn't get any notification that there'd been a reply on the thread, which is quite strange. -
Aug 4, 2007 4:07 PM in response to ewwby Timothy Hefferon,Hi,
With sympathies to Intel-chip owners (I haven't found SheepShaver very easy to use), how do those of us with PRE-Intel machines install a Classic environment? I have a bootable OS 9 CD (to which my machine refuses to boot), and OS 9.1 and 9.2 upgrade CDs. None of these seem to allow me to put a Classic environment on my Mac.
How do I get a Classic environment on my Mac???
Thank you very much -

Aug 16, 2007 2:43 AM in response to Allan Eckertby Joel Suben,Forgive me for jumping in so oddly--I just created an account here and cannot find anywhere the way to initiate a new post.
Just had a new hard drive installed (by wonderful Tekserve NYC) and am reinstalling the few software applications from before.
I cannot install Brother printer software (not supported by OS X) and cannot get my IMac G5 to operate in Classic Mode so I can once again download the updates from web to allow me once again to run my beloved 6-yr-old printer on my iMac. (I did all this effortlessly 2yrs ago, but since installation of new hard drive cannot.)
I have even gone so far as to try to install (manually) OS 9 with 9.1 and 9.2 updates (all retained from my G3). Nothing doing--System Preferences, "advanced" (rebuild), I even renamed the OS9-bundled system folder "classic system folder." Nothing doing.
You could dismiss all this by telling me just to print from my still-operable G3, but that is so cumbersome. -

These are reasonable requests. The intel machines are not Mac compatible. This is why my journey with Apple has come to an end. This is the last Apple computer I will ever buy. -

Nov 16, 2007 12:34 PM in response to JohnMayby CompSciGuy,What brouhaha! A Mac Genius said I could boot in OS 9, but all the support articles state otherwise. I have a Powerbook 1.67 GHz 15” machine; the last pre Intel model. I upgraded to Leopard expecting to boot from OS 9 on an external disk, but now I am not sure what to do. Do I run SheepShaver on a Leopard disk or run in Classic Mode on another drive with Panther? Does one emulate OS 9 and one is native? What is the best "Classic" option for someone with a non-Intel but non OS 9 bootable Powerbook??? Please include which is the best Classic OS (8 or 9 or 9.1, etc.)
P.S. Somewhat related: I am not clear that the Leopard upgrade to Core Image will benefit me even though I have a compatible graphics card. I was also told at the Apple store that APE Manager could not cause Leopard boot problems...HELLO??

Nov 16, 2007 1:21 PM in response to CompSciGuyby eww,Hi, CompSciGuy. Your 1.67GHz Powerbook cannot and never could start up in OS 9. You can run Classic on it in all versions of OS X prior to Leopard, and if you're willing either to partition your internal HD or use an external HD, you can boot into Panther or Tiger when you need to run a Classic application or into Leopard when you don't. Classic mode in Panther or Tiger requires a minimum of OS 9.1, but the Classic support installer on your Powerbook's original model-specific discs is what you should use; that will install 9.2.2.
To learn about using SheepShaver in Leopard, go to Sheepshaver's web site and/or this site. There may very well be other places to find commentary from people who use (or after trying it, have decided not to use) SheepShaver in Leopard, but not being a Leopard user myself, I haven't looked for them.
