Currently Being ModeratedJun 17, 2007 6:09 AM (in response to meloman)FCE versions prior to 3.5 have an issue with OSX 10.4.9 when capturing. It appears Spotlight will begin indexing the capture file while capturing is ongoing causing dropped frames and general mayhem.
The solution to that problem is to open Spotlight and add your capture scratch folder to the Privacy list.
As to the other issues, perhaps an archive and reinstall from scratch of the whole disk may be in order. Updating the OS is not a trivial thing.

Currently Being ModeratedJun 17, 2007 11:12 PM (in response to Studio X)FCE 2 won't even let me capture anything to find out if I get any drop frames w/ Tiger, which to me, sounds more resource-intensive system than Panther. FCE2 quits a second after I choose Capture from the File menu. No error messages or anything like that. It feels like Capture is the new Quit w/ FCE2 + Tiger! The capture window doesn't show up at all. I have tried this more than a dozen times with the same result. I even tried reseting my prefs and personal cache or whatever, as suggested in another thread. It seems really odd, to me, that something like this would happen. Or, maybe not. I had wanted to upgrade to FCE 3.5 all along, but needed to get Tiger. So, I got Tiger first, intending to get FCE 3.5 down the road. But, with FCE2 not working, I had to cough up the dough sooner than expected. So, I will find out, soon enough, if FCE 3.5 will work with Tiger, as flawlessly as FCE 2 did w/ Panther + my Canopus ADVC110 as my capture device. We'll see. If I can't get this to work, my only solution seems like going back to OSX 3.9 which would be a bit*h. I would then waste having bought the upgrade to Tiger and FCE 3.5.
So to sum it up, things worked with my previous equation...
FCE 2 + OSX 3.9 + CANOPUS ADVC110 = IT WORKS!!! = HAPPY CUSTOMER
And then things didn't work so well....
FCE 2 + OSX 3.9 + CANOPUS ADVC110 = NOOOOO!!! I can no longer capture, which is like giving a cameraman with a camera with no tape!!! = UNHAPPY CUSTOMER AND MORE WEARY OF BUYING/UPGRADING ANYTHING ANYMORE IN THE FUTURE.
And so I am awaiting the installation of my brand-spanking new FCE 3.5 upgrade:
FCE 3.5 + OSX 4.9 + CANOPUS ADVC110 = ?????

After triple checking Tom's suggestion regarding QuickTime, I reckon you should be SOOOO close it should work.

Currently Being ModeratedJun 18, 2007 2:10 AM (in response to Alchroma)So.... FCE 3.5 was installed and the installation process even provided more drama than I needed... something w/ multiple discs installations... but that's another story. After starting up FCE 3.5 w/ my fingers+toes crossed, I was THAT close to throwing my laptop out the window when the same thing happened!!! FCE 3.5 would quit, the same way, FCE 2 did when I clicked on Capture.
But, I didn't throw my laptop out the window and instead... surfed the net b/c I had remembered coming across the same article about quicktime that Tom suggested and miraculously, it was the cure of my computer's capture illness.... somehow, re-installing quicktime made it work and I can capture again! thanks for all your help. I appreciate it very much.

Currently Being ModeratedAug 3, 2007 10:10 PM (in response to meloman)Not to be trivial - but I have the same exact FCE 2.0.3 crash on capture problem and I too have tried everything - but if I reinstall Quicktime I lose my Pro key that I paid for (which BTW is a Mac scam - because everytime you let it automatically upgrade QT you have to pay for the pro key again- it's twisted).
but I guess it's better them my current problem...iMac G4, Mac OS X (10.4.10)
Currently Being ModeratedAug 4, 2007 3:46 PM (in response to Chris LaValle)Why would you lose QT Pro if you reinstall it. Just put in the serial number again.
Switch off automatic update. You only need to repurchase QT pro when there is a QT upgrade that's a whole point number, like QT6 to 7. That's been happening about once every five years.15" 2.4G MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.10)
