Folks. This Works. It has fixed every machine its been tried on thus far.

    2 things:

    1. Go to your C:\Program Files\Safari\Safari.resources and make sure there are two fonts files named Lucida Grande.ttf and Lucida Grande Bold.ttf. If not, get them here: - I actually copied these fonts to my C:\Windows\Fonts directory.

    2. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari (Windows XP) - or -
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\Safari (Windows Vista) to edit your Fonts.plist file. Here is a snip of what I add to the top of the Fonts listed in this file which has solved missing text and strange text issues:

    <key>Verdana Bold</key>
    <key>Verdana Italic</key>
    <key>Verdana Bold Italic</key>
    <key>Tahoma Bold</key>
    <key>Tahoma Bold</key>
    <key>Trebuchet Bold</key>
    <key>Trebuchet Bold Italic</key>
    <key>Trebuchet Italic</key>
    <key>Trebuchet MS</key>
    <key>Trebuchet MS Bold</key>
    <key>Trebuchet MS Bold Italic</key>
    <key>Trebuchet MS Italic</key>
    <key>Lucida Grande</key>
    <string>C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\Lucida Grande.ttf</string>
    <key>Lucida Grande Bold</key>
    <string>C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\Lucida Grande Bold.ttf</string>
    <key>Times New Roman</key>
    <key>Times New Roman Bold</key>
    <key>Times New Roman Italic</key>
    <key>Times New Roman Bold Italic</key>
    <key>Times Bold</key>
    <key>Times Italic</key>
    <key>Times Bold Italic</key>

NOTE: on some Vista installations, you may need to check the file names in your Windows Fonts folder to make sure that the file names in the list above match what is actually in the folder (right-click > properties). I have see some files end with _0.ttf.

Finally, there is a posting of the nightly build from Webkit that is supposed to be with the font issue resolved. You might try this fix first:

I installed safari to my sisters emachine's and it pops up that it has recovered from a serious error so I am going to stick with version 2 on my iBook.

FYI...Safari 3.0.2 has been released and has fixed all my font related issues on both machines. Do an Apple Update and download more hacking required!

Latest fix corrected my PC and also fixed the crashing at launch on my Virtual PC. Even thought users got to do a lot of the QA on this, I am pretty happy with how fast the fixes have been flowing out of Apple development.
Thanks to everyone that worked on the issues in the forum and at Apple.

I can confirm that Safari for Windows 3.0.2 has also resolved the font issue I was having with XP SP2 and 850 fonts installed. Everything now seems to be working properly.
