Brand-new Intel MacBook Pro, 10.4.10:
Setting up a dialup account, we managed to create four configurations before we got one to work. Problem was, making any change to current configuration created a new one; we couldn't just edit the current config. and save.

Now, we cannot delete the three incorrect configurations; all four are present in Internet Connect -> Configurations -> Edit Configurations pop-up menu, but all are dimmed/unavailable for edit/delete, except the current/working config. Makes for a confusing dialup menu.....

Deleted <~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist> expecting all to vanish, but no such luck.

Trying to recreate the situation on a G4 running 10.4.10 and I encounter a completely different - dare I say - bug? Multiple/different configs are available to edit, but each seems to duplicate first config and ignore changes!

Newly created (G4 test) files include:
<~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist>
<~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.modemmenuextra.plist>
<~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkconnect.000a956677c0.plist>

Deleting all three prefs above removed all configs from Internet Connect on the G4 after restart; will that work on the Intel MacBook, too? I'd rather edit them as intended, if anybody knows a way to make 'em active/available.

Thank you, one and all for any suggestions.....

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...

    applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

If that doesn't help, generally the files that hold this info are...

    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

Hmmm..... There is no </Users/nnnn> on the G4 under 10.4.10 - an Intel-only thing? No folders anywhere with "nnnn" in name.

We did what we could with Disk Utility on the Intel MacBook Pro, but I didn't know about the "nnnn" folder. I'll take a look and give Applejack a try, too. Thanks!

    Hi

Replace nnnn with your shortname (name under House icon in Users folder). Think of nnnn as being the same as ~ (you used that in your original post).

    Thanks Steve, sorry M/C mich!

Guess I need to change that 'nnnn', 3rd person I've confused.

You're welcome BD, didn't confuse me BTW

D'oh! I thought "nnnn" was a bit peculiar. Now it makes sense. Thanks!
Any clue as to why editing that list is disabled (except for current/working config)? Is this "bug" specific to our MacBook for some reason?

    Thank you BD and Steve!

No, they should be editable... hoping AppleJack takes care of it... seems possibly Permissions problem, but not sure yet.

We repaired permissions twice; no change. And I haven't seen that MacBook since, but as soon as I do: I will try tips above, post results and credits. Standby! And thanks to all.

I'm back (sorry) with more bad news. I'm seeing this same configuration issue on PPC and Intel Macs, including two more brand-new notebooks, always when troubleshooting a dialup connection. The only thing they all have in common is Tiger, 10.4.8 - 10.4.10 and a dialup connection. I can't be the only one seeing this....?

Any edit to an existing Internet Connect configuration creates a new configuration; once created, configurations cannot be deleted. Usually, the only configuration available for editing is the correct, working config - the one config that should be left alone - and any change creates yet another config.

AppleJack isn't the answer, and I can't go deleting all those prefs files over and over. Unless dialup is configured correctly the very first time it's tried, Internet Connect creates a mess of configs. Is everybody except N. Cal. on broadband?

I'm on Dialup, and up to 10.4.8 & 10.4.10 on some... they don't have that problem for me!?

How many configurations do you have in Internet Connect? If there's only one, you probably got it right the first time. If you try to edit that config, you'll create a new one and the games will begin for you, too! No?

Nope, mine doesn't ADD one when I edit it, it just edits it!

Nope, I made 7 of them, could edit them, delete them copy them... never a problem, never made a new one on it's own... tried everything to break it, but nope... just works.

This was on a PPC/Mini/G4/1.42/OS10.4.10/fully updated.

Well, BD, I'm stumped. Thank you for going thru all that trouble - glad you didn't encounter "the glitch." I appreciate your help! Dunno what to do next...

It's happened enough times that I've come to expect it. Typically, someone has 3-5 Internet Connect configurations and can't get online. They'll be named "Dialup Main," "Dialup Main1," "Dialup Main2," and the only one that's available for editing will be the one that works. (They can't get online because Internet Connect is set to one of the incorrect configs.) The modem menu will list them all, and it's confusing. I can't confirm this, but it seems as though Internet Connect defaults to the first (incorrect) "Dialup Main" setting, fails, then the machine is brought here.

Maybe I'm just lucky that way...? It's been a long day. Thank you, BD.

Just wondering... could these installs all be from the same image/CD/DVD?

How about just setting up the Dialup Accounts in Network, without ever touching Internet Connect?
