If you just want to send a SMS message use this:
If you want to send an MMS message, send it to the persons email. MMS (mms.att.net) will not work for the iPhone. That is the address you use with the iPhone if you wish to send an MMS message from the iPhone to another AT&T customer.

I was previously using firstname.lastname@example.org. This stopped working about 26 October and now does not work. email@example.com now works.
If Apple and AT&T consider it legitimate to use SMTP servers to send SMS messages to an iPhone, it would be helpful for them to document the address to be used for this purpose. I find no such documentation in the iPhone user's guide, nor on AT&T's Web site.G4 tower, Mac OS X (10.4.10), iPhone 8GB
